Florida #1 in killer tornadoes

But the reason is poor quality home such as mobile homes. The tornados aren't as strong, but more people die.

hmmm point said
, complacency is the real killer?

I wouldn't call poverty complacency. Mobile homes are pretty much used mostly by those who are low income. It's not like people have time to run to shelters that are safer when there's a tornado warning. It doesn't help that theyve found that tornadoes are attracted to areas where mobile homes also are, which is usually on the outskirts of a town and they are where the terrain changes from city to nature, and it's that terrain change that can trigger the tornado.

I never would have guessed Florida as #1.

That doesn't surprise me, I remember years ago how devastated Miami and south Florida was to a major storm that happened when The Cristina Show was airing on Univision. Ohio does surprise me...it always seems KS and OK that made the news every year during hurricane season....poor people...

Also remember the high water table in most of Florida and thus the lack of basements.

Knock on wood...I live in NEFlorida for over 30 years and have never seen a Tornado...altho' we do have warnings often (on the news)....

Your right RR, that is like people thinking that "everyone" in California is going to be killed by an earthquake. Tornados and Hurricanes are far more dangerous and happen much more frequently.

I did find the "California Earthquake" bit helpful years ago. Cousins had moved to California from Southern Illinois and it got me reading about them with more interest. As a result, I recognized what was going on when we had one here in Southern Illinois.

Big earthquakes in California happen around every 25 years. They very seldom hit the same area. Tornados & Hurricanes happen numerous times every year and cause widespread damage.

Yeah that is what happen to the schools in OK , they where not build strong enough and a lot of students dies . I would never live in a mobile home for this reason.

When I worked in Boston, there was an earthquake in the New England area I think and we felt it shake in Boston. Maybe it was a couple of states over, I don't recall but I didn't even realize what it was until it was on the news. All my coworkers were just as surprised. It's not an everyday occurrence in Boston to get earthquake tremors.

I have felt 2 earthquakes in New England. One was years ago , my sister and I where visiting some people and one of them had 2 birds that where resting on their perch stands and out of no where both birds freaked out and flew across the kitchen .We had no idea what had upset the birds until we got back home and found we had an earthquake. My mom was bed and she felt it. We had another one where I am living now and I knew it was an earthquake b/c I lived in California for nine years and we had a few earthquakes.

There are some gorgeous mobile home parks around here. Senior living only. I lived in a mobile home when I was first married. It was beautiful but they turned it into Senior living and people started to be not so friendly to us 20 years olds. The rental space fees are crazy expensive.

So have I...even bought 2....

For mobile homes, owners are always told to evacuate and find a storm shelter when there are tornados here.

I don't really see a lot of mobile homes around here personally speaking.... maybe out in the boonies.... :ugh: definitely not around my area.... However I will agree... we don't have basements.... I don't think I've ever met anyone with a basement here come to think of it....
