First thread and looking for some help

Hi Everyone,

I am a father of an amazing 5 year old boy who has bi lateral cochlear implants. He is due to receive FM system soon, and has been offered a comfort audio system, which i am not personally keen on.

Personally I would like him to get the Phonak MLXi or similar, so my question to you guys is in education (main stream class room environment) what options are out there and what would you guys recommend, based on personal experience etc.

If there are links ect that would be great too, will help me in my research. I want to get this right so would appreciate all advice as quickly as possible no matter if you thinks its mundane.

For me, I love my Phonak FM system which I can use for noisy places, classroom situations, TV, FaceTime, Skype, music, shopping, work and all sorts. It also works with phone calls but I'm too deaf for that.

Some people on here don't agree with FM systems as they believe that if the hearing aids and cochlear implants are set correctly, FM systems should not be needed but I personally love my FM system.

Just beware tho that FM systems so times cut kids off from the other kids as all they hear is the teacher in their ears but if the teacher remembers to turn it off at the correct time and not forget then that shouldn't happen.

Thank you for your reply. Obviously my son can not advocate for what he wants so I have to do this, but he is completely verbal and my hope is that especially in an busy active classroom getting a direct audio sound input will increase his concentration and will help him get more enjoyment out of learning process. Thank you for you help :)

That's awesome that he's completely verbal....have you checked out resources at your state's Deaf School and Sign too? He might find ASL as a second language to be of help....often even verbal kids find ASL useful,for social emotional development (especailly when he's older like in fourth grade/middle school/high school)and or capitalizing on the nautral visual processing strengh that dhh kids have....You don't know if it's helpful or not unless you try it......Oh...and Deaf means a whole spectrum of things from audilogically HOH to profound voice off unaided/unimplanted....don't hesistate about options and educational placement or camps b/c you don't think he's "deaf enough"......Maybe he might really benifit....you never know unless you try.
My best advice....TRIAL it...Ask HIM if he likes it or not.....He's old enough to give feedback on whether or not it's helpful or not.

That's the main problem actually..........you can only hear the teacher and not the class discussions.....THAT is real learning.........hearing what other kids think of what they are learning,rather then passively listening to the teacher.
