WASHINGTON -- Indications are that meat from cloned animals is about to be cleared for the human food supply.
The announcement from the Food and Drug Administration could come as soon as Thursday.
Federal scientists said there's no difference between food from cloned animals and food from conventional livestock.
The FDA also believes that no special labels are needed for food from clones or their offspring. But consumer groups said labels are a must, because surveys have shown people to be uncomfortable with the idea of cloned livestock.
And there will be calls for food companies and supermarkets to refuse to sell food from clones.
Final approval of cloned animals for food is months away; before then the public will have a chance to comment.
