Family members being sorry that you're deaf?

I just read lips and ask for a summary on anything I missed. Nothing to be sorry about, it's something I accept.

I somewhat have any experience like that. But I do feel, sometime, left out if my family is busy or discussing or something. At the dinner, my mom or sister tend to sign for me. My family dislike to see me singled out completely.

Yeah, I've bene there, done that... back then my mom signs sometimes, not always. Sometime I just excuse myself and watch TV or something to keep me occupied than just sit there, and watch people's conversation that I do not understand.... waste of my time, if you know what I mean. :)

I'm actually dreading to visit my family. Not because they are sorry for me, but because it is sooooo boring. There is nothing for me to do. I have sit there and plaster a smile for everyone.

I had a great time last night at my friends' Thanksgiving party with around 40 deaf people and that will help me deal with my in laws today not knowing what everyone is saying most of the time. I think having a good balance of both helps me a lot.

That's great Shel!! I'm really happy that you found something that works to makes it bearable for you.

For us, since my hubby grandmother died the family doesn't get together anymore. We are just going to be the 6 of us and I have to do all the cooking. That way, I don't have to deal with conversation too much. Also, mother-in-law doesn't know how to cook a turkey. She either had her mother otr an aunt do it, and after Granny died, she went out to eat for the holiday. Now I'm here and get to do it all. Yeah me!! NOT!:laugh2:
