Manager Says Family Wasted Food Several Times

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet.

The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management at Dragon House accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.

Dershem said she paid for her buffet on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits. They said she would pile her plate with food, take one bite and throw it away.

"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab ragoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."

Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check.

Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant does not offer an all-you-can waste buffet. He said Dershem's family took food, didn't finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said. He says he won't allow her back in the restaurant unless she changes her ways.

I bet Theyre gonna get a Lawyer now and tell the judge they we were kicked out cause were black.Thats what a black group of people did at dennys while other waiters didnt serve em while they were waiting.The black group claimed The waiters all serve white customers first and then they waited 15 minutes to get served then when they order it then they waited 20 minutes for their food while other white customers got their orders and again they served em last.So they all complained to the manager and he didnt do a thing.So they want the the NAACP to complain about they didnt get served sooner cause they were black.So the NAACP Filed a lawsuit against dennys and they settled the case for $650,000 and agreed to donate 10% every customers bill to the united negro college fund.Thats why my Me and my DAD wont go to dennys anymore cause they give in to the NAACP.Plus me and my Dad is Boycotting TEXACO cause Jessie Jackson forced TEXACO to Promote blacks as supervisors which the company were promoting white workers.I dont like people whine n complain every crappy little thing. SO WHAT Life is unfair? SO WHAT??.So i hope these people sue these people who own that chinese resteraunt.
 
It's late and my eyes are tired but did I miss reading something that said the family was black? :confused:

Who reported this to the press? The family or the restaurant? If it were my family, I'd be way too ashamed to make a public announcement of my bad behavior. Yikes!
 
Sorry about the black comment,But thats how black people are.They pull shit to make themselves right.Like for example,,I see blacks everyday obtain an handicapped parking permit and theyre not even handicapped.This burns the hell outta me!!
 
That family deserved it. It is very expensive to host a buffet and would be wasting a lot of money when food isn't consumed appropriately. In fact, not eating what you pick is often considered an insult. Imagine how your mom would feel if you told her that you wanted 2 helpings of corn only to eat one bite and dump the rest in the sink. She would be insulted!
 
Well look at dogs for example ok? Have you ever seen a dog the food you gave it ate a little bit and decides he doesnt like the food? Well maybe they didnt like what they put on their plate what they tried so they get something else.Ever heard your parents say "" Try it,,You might like it"" Well maybe they didnt like the food so,They got something else to try from the buffet.

Obviously, you didn't read the article correctly...

You're right. Maybe, the dog doesn't like the food. But that doesn't explain why the family did that.

I agree with you. If dont like foods then dont pick up and eat. Leave it there let other peeps like to eat. It is simple.

Dogs don't know any better. Hopefully, people have more consideration than dogs.

Sure, everyone "samples" new foods, and sometimes we don't like what we sample. That's the reason "samples" should be single or small servings, especially at a buffet. If you do like the food, you can always go back and get more. If you don't like it, and you took only a small amount, that is not so wasteful.
 
I don't like the all-you-can-eat buffet style places except for a few in Las Vegas. To me the food's yucky, cold, old, institutionalized-tasting. Same goes for their desserts!
 
Dude, that's not "how black people are". There are some black people who might do stuff like that, but there are also some white people who are totally uncouth and inconsiderate of others and would do this. You know what they say happens when you ASS-U-ME...

Also, if you're not sure about the food... don't take large quantities.

I'm not crazy for Chinese food. My ex-girlfriend took me to this great China Buffet restaurant. Since I wasn't crazy for Chinese food, I went anyway since she mentioned that they "Americanized" some of the food. So, I took one piece of everything that looked alright to me. After trying everything, I liked 7 out of 10 things I put on the plate. I did take a bite out of all of them though. :)

I went back for bigger helpings of those 7 I liked.
 
I read the article, but it doesn't say they are black. And besides, they have ALREADY paid for the food, so why was the manager making a big deal about how wasteful the family are? It doesn't sound right.
 
It had nothing to say about the races, nor the article has mentioned it. The point is the restaurant had enough with this particular family. They're wasting their foods, I know it was all you can eat buffet, but what they did was taking too much food than expected and leave them to rot. Kids tends not to eat off the entire plate, but adults need to come to an excuse why they rather leave the foods on the plate. I am no fan of buffet, I only picked less amount of food then eat it to see if I like it. I do the experiment. I don't know what this family usually do when they're at a buffet restaurant.

I think the restaurants' bigger fear/concern to see their food wasted.

Let's say, full? No problem, take it home with a take-out box. Requesting one wouldn't hurt. So I think this restaurant had enough with this family and decided to kick them out. Banning is a bit harsh, IMO.

In fact, that customers should use their common sense. It sounds like that they are somewhat homeless.

Actually, what is the difference that the employees have to throw the food in the trash everyday at the end of hour. It's same thing. Well.

Most "all-you-can-eat" restaurants don't allow take out of leftovers.

Normally, buffet restaurants don't allow taking home leftovers but if the customer is there at closing time they might get lucky. Maybe the restaurant owner will let them take some home rather than throwing it out. :)

Most state health rules require throwing out leftovers for safety reasons. I know it seems wasteful but it is a pretty strict rule. Especially for food that has been sitting out on the buffet line.
 
My grandmother took me out to an all you can eat Buffet.I wasnt a chinese buffet.She had a really big Handbag and she had dozens of Gallon Glad ziploc bags.After we all got done eatting she puts polish sausages in one ziploc bag.Italian Sausages in another ziploc bag.Jumbo Hot Dogs in another ziploc bag.Fried chicken legs in another ziploc bag.Corn on the cob in another ziploc bag.Dinner Rolls in another ziploc bag.And Belive it or not she put Rice in another ziploc bag.They never serched her bag.Then she went home got the Food saver out and freeze them so whatever she wanted them she can heat up the microwave.

Like I said, I don't go to buffets often so I don't know much about the policy of taking food home. It was just my assumation.
