A New Jersey couple is suing their landlord for a refund after they said paranormal activity caused them to flee their rental home.

Michele Callan and her fiance, Josue Chinchilla, moved into the home in Toms River, N.J., with Callan's two children on March 1 and were immediately spooked.

"Three taps on the TV, taps on the shoulder…" Chinchilla told ABC News.

At first they chalked it up to the adjustment period of moving into a new home.

But things only got spookier, they said.

Doors opened and closed. The family even claimed they recorded strange voices whispering, "Let it burn."

The new tenants said that between the menacing voices, flickering lights and clothes mysteriously flying from their closets, they couldn't take it anymore. They fled the three-bedroom home and checked into a hotel, where they said they have been living since March 13.

Callan and Chinchilla filed suit last week in New Jersey Superior Court, seeking the return of their $2,250 security deposit from their landlord, Richard Lopez.

Lopez filed a counter-suit claiming the couple is using alleged paranormal activity as a way to break their lease.

"Frankly, there is something else going on," David Semanchik, who is Lopez's lawyer, told the Asbury Park Press. "She is a single mom, she has this fiancé living with her. I think she is in over her head and she can't afford the rent."

The couple said that isn't the case, but ultimately a judge will have the final word on whether the family will be able to escape their alleged nightmare on Lowell Avenue.

If this is true, and this is in NJ, I am not sure about NJ real estate law that requires to provide anything that are paranormal to tenants or new homeowners. In NYS, there is a law requires to provide information that the location has something paranormal or is a haunted location. If the owner or seller refuses to do so and new owner/tenants finds it is haunted, its a violation and fines and refund to new owner/tenants. True!

If any places has no records of it being investigated by paranormal investigators (like myself) and its up for sale or for rent, those places can not be up for sale/rent until it has been investigated. It is the law in NYS!

I am sure there has to be similar law in NJ as well as many other states. Please check your state and if you need an investigation, contact your nearest paranormal investigation group.

This looks ridiculous. Then again, I've not been to NY for many years. I've never been to NJ. I've spent a lot of time in Michigan and Illinois so what do I know about paranormal activities? I just don't know if the renters have ground in this suit. Will be interesting to see.

In Charleston, homeowners wish they had ghosts in their houses. It makes them more valuable.

My daughter says she and her friends have seen and/or heard "someone" in our house. Perhaps it's my late husband. I know I felt his presence on occasion at night for a while after his death.
With my poor hearing, even when I hear a "strange" noise, I'm not so sure it's strange...it's probably just an appliance or something.

I know our kitchen door will open all by itself. This will be after I pull hard to make sure it is closed. It has even opened after we lock the deadbolt. We just say it is my father-in-law.

At one place I lived, the light would come on (in the kitchen)....we would cut it off, then a few minutes later, it would flip right back on...."Chimes" could be heard upstairs, sort of a melody music......and at times, when home alone, could feel sort of a "brush" against me as if someone walked close by and I could feel the air "woosh"....Very weird, indeed...

I totally believe that :) Had a couple experiences of my own, some good some not so good-down right evil actually. I always wear a black tourmaline necklace and carry tigers eye stone for protection as people wear the cross-I carry gem stones.

Do I believe this couples story? Maybe. I'd like to see a paranormal group go in and investigate these claims to see if it's real.
EVP-is very real. The recording of the deads voices using tape recorders. I've been too afraid to try it myself and stay away from most things that involve trying to communicate with the Dead or other "things" :eek3:.

Best advise I can give is-don't become a beacon of light for the other side to see. :laugh2:

any more experiences robin?
