It's a controversial idea in a country known for prudishness about sex — teaching kids as young as 5 about the birds and bees.

But with one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe, the British government is bringing sex education to all schools in England — including kindergarten-aged children. link

I must admit this is a bit too young to start teaching sex education at 5 years old when they are learning their 123's and ABC's.

I would think that they would keep the program developmentally appropriate, and only give information that a child is capable of understanding at any particular age. Sex ed at this age is usually restricted to "good touch, bad touch" type information.

But yeah for the British government. At least they see that lack of sex ed and teen pregnancy is correlated.

I agree with teaching them about "bad" and "good" touch cuz there are so many children that age group being molested and unable to inform someone what's happening to them. However, to teach them the birds and the bees at that age...no, I dont agree..

Yeah, not only are they unable to tell anyone, they don't even realize that there is anything wrong with what has happened to them until they are taught that it is wrong.

I can't see any program trying to teach the birds and the bees to a 5 year old. They would just tune it out, anyway, because they don't have the ability to comprehend something that detailed yet.

I'm nervous to 'speak' my opinion............... Well, here I go. I have to disagree so strong about this link. I think it's too much. Only if it happens in USA, I hate to say... but I have to take my child out of public school and homeschooled my future kid instead. I'd like to see a kid learns "good touch vs. bad touch" subject, "do not talk to strangers" subject, "self-respect and self-aware" subject. NOT SEX EDUCATION, just no. Well, sure, I don't mind a kid can learn a basic sex education when he/she is a fourth grader or old enough. I do understand why England wanted the best thing for little kids and prevention of teen/preteen pregnanies, I can understand that. But, I'm sorry, I have to disagee with that link........

I don't care if you throw a flame against me cos my POV is different. Let it be. =/

I totally agree with this.

Actually - even if it's being taught at school that your kid is in... you don't have to worry. It's most likely that the school will require parental permission. Since you will not be signing the parental permission for this bird & bee lecture... your kid will not receive it.

no problem! :cool2:

Yep, in the states, parental permission is the rule of thumb.

and that, my friend, is... wait a min... omg! I did NOT just talk like McCain :laugh2: anyway - that is the AMERICAN way.... freedom of choice. You can choose what's being taught to your kids but I certainly hope you do not deny such access to valuable knowledge for your kids. :cool2:

Uh, huh. You know what I don't understand? People who speak out so strongly against abortion, but don't want to educate teens on how to protect themselves so they won't ever need an abortion. Or ones that want to involuntarily sterilize all sex abusers, but don't want kids to learn what they need to so they are at less risk of ever becoming a victim. It just doesn't make sense to me.

i think 5 is too young. i didnt even knows girls existed till i was in my teens. but i wonder if they do that, do they use barney and baby bop to demonstrate?

you'd be surprised how much they know at 5 years old nowadays. I was appalled....

They wouldn't be teaching you about girls. They would be teaching you about your own body.
