A child's recurrent ear infections can affect the whole family, causing lost sleep and missed work days. Ear tubes may help.

Children who have recurrent ear infections or have hearing loss associated with fluid behind the eardrum may be good candidates for ear tubes.

Dr. Dan Kirse, a pediatric otolaryngologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center says, "An ear tube is a small tube that is placed in the ear drum that helps the hole in the ear drum to drain fluid and allow air behind the eardrum."

The procedure requires a trip to the operating room, but only for about 5 to 10 minutes. Children go home the same day and resume normal activities very quickly, hopefully with fewer ear infections.

"Putting in ear tubes does not give you a permanent fix for your ear problems. It's just basically giving you a band-aid for the problem, and there are some children who require longer periods of time to outgrow their ear problems."

About 30% of children will require a second set of ear tubes.

Dr. Kirse says inserting ear tubes is probably the most commonly done procedure at Brenner Children's Hospital.

Yeah they put tubes in my ear(s) when I was one. One week later, I finally started walking because it helped my balance so much.

got 6 or 7 tubes when I was a child....that was in 70's..

technology has improved. my oldest son has tubes..one is fixing to fall out...he had it since he just turned one.. he is three now....it is very beneficial.

my youngest seems doesnt have ear infection lately like my oldest.. it varies on each child.

My daughter had tubes put in her ears back in Feb. I can't see a difference she still gets ear infections.

Hi I had tube in my ear... But I had about 5 time putting tube but the last one was i was on the plane from hawaii to go chicago.. It pop out it made my ear bleed so my parents had to take me to the hospital in chicago becaue it was bleeding and the doctor told my parents i have hole in my ear drum.. the doctor said there no way they can fix it.. so My mom was so piss at the doctor in California he the one who put the tube in my ear... So My Mom called my doctor in Hawaii ask him what they think they should do. The doctor told my mom and dad that there nothing they can do because it can be a risk to fix the hole in my ear drum... So Today I am 37 years old still have the hole in my ear... I had that hole since I was 16 years old... but I still get ear infection.. everyday so I have to be careful how I get water in my ear

I had tubes twice, once when I was 2 and again when I was 5. Appearntly I had a lot of fluid build up? The reason for my HOH isn't known really..I'd like to know, just you know for the hell of it. Not that it would matter- I wouldnt change me for anything :) I actually dont even have aid's. When I was younger my aunt whos an interpreter told my parents not to do it.
