Employee Fell Asleep in Cargo Hold That Forced Emergency Landing

My understanding is that all cargo/transport type planes pressurize their cargo holds and for heat, the limiting factor is whether or not there are live animals there but most of these planes are heated anyway.....

Well, guess not all planes have that. I know for sure many planes with cargo underneath isn't pressured and temp controlled, there was an incident that somebody got stuck in there and was freezing, and survived. That was few years ago if I recall correctly.
The temp in the sky is minus 50 F, thats brutal cold up there.

I think you got it wrong.

A 15-year-old boy reportedly was able to stow away in a plane's wheel well and survive the 5½-hour Hawaiian Airlines flight Sunday from San Jose to Maui.

Incidences of people sneaking onto planes aren't as uncommon as you might think. Since 1996, there have been 105 stowaways on 94 flights worldwide, according to the Federal Aviation Administration in an e-mail to USA TODAY Network.

More than 76% of those attempts resulted in deaths, the FAA says.

The FAA's numbers reflect stowaways in the wheel wells, nose wells and other unpressurized areas. The statistics don't include people who sneak into the cargo compartment or passenger area.

Stowaways in wheel wells, as in the most recent case, have to contend with freezing temperatures, lack of oxygen and the risk of being crushed by the plane's wheels.

Though the FBI called the case "a miracle," one aviation expert says the incident raises eyebrows.

"In every circumstance I know of, it's fatal," said Cass Howell, associate dean of the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, about stowaways in wheel wells. "I wouldn't be shocked to find out that some part of his story doesn't hold up."

The stowaway survived temperatures as low as 80 degrees below zero and the thin air available at 38,000 feet, FBI spokesman Tom Simon said. "He was unconscious for the lion's share of the flight," Simon said. "Kid's lucky to be alive."

A Cleveland-area emergency physician said the temperature might not have dipped quite so low in the wheel well, which could account for the teen's survival. The low oxygen is harder to explain.

"From the standpoint of science, this is a very lucky child. … It would be extremely ill-advised for anyone to try to duplicate his feat," said Howard Mell, a spokesman for the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Other recent plane stowaway instances:

•In August 2013, a teen in Nigeria survived a 35-minute trip in the wheel well of a domestic flight. The boy was seen running to the plane as it was taxiing on the runway. Despite the possible presence of the boy, who was 13 or 14 years old, the pilots continued with takeoff, the Associated Press reports. The plane did not fly above 25,000 feet, the AP reports.

•A 26-year-old man fell to his death in London as a flight from Angola began its descent at Heathrow Airport in 2012. The man, who was from Mozambique, wanted a better life in Europe, according to his employer, the AP reported.

•A 16-year-old fell from a wheel well to his death in a Boston suburb in 2010 during a flight from Charlotte. The boy had run away from home.

•In 2000, Fidel Maruhi survived a 4,000-mile, 7½-hour journey from Tahiti to Los Angeles. When he was discovered, Maruhi's body temperature was just 79 degrees, Slate reported.

•In 2000, two Cuban teens sneaked onto a flight from Havana bound for London. A doctor ruled that the boys died of lack of oxygen probably 20 minutes into the flight, according to The Guardian.

it's the wheel well, not cargo hold.

Yeah. I really don't think terrorist would want to be stuck in cargo and unable to take control of plane.

stuck? if a terrorist can hide in the cargo hold undetected... he knows enough to get up the plane.

I was just thinking about it and I believe you're right. I think all planes are pressurized as part of structural integrity when flying at high altitude. it makes sense that way.... physics or whatnots.

Yea, and she wasn't even on that plane... why worry?

This is being investigated to see how this was able to happen , it's a safety issues . People had been able to get onto the runway ,unnoticed . So you think it's wrong to be concerned about innocent people getting killed ??

So many things has happening the past years , the 'underpants bomber'
the 'shoe bomber' . If an employee can go unnoticed in the cargo space so can a terrorist and that is why this is being investigated.

Ur too paranoid! No one can survive in cargo space... when plane gets into sky, theres much less oxygen in there for anyone to survive, plus its damn cold down there. If plane didnt make emergency landing this guy will have been dead.

it did happen poor bloke screams the plane had turn back...jeeeeeeeeez bet he was cold

He was not cold he was freaking out b/c he was locked in the cargo space and had no way b/c the plane was in the air. I traveled 6,000 miles round trip with my Samoyed ,she flew in the cargo space and was fine. Your dog has to be healthy and a calm dog mine was. I traveled with two dogs that way , I gave the handler at the airport a big tip each time and they were very careful with my dogs.

No, you were literally screaming and accusing that guy as a terrorist right away without taking step backward and figure out whats going on.

First of all, have you heard of "Murphy's Law"? If anything can go wrong, it will. It does not matter how perfect the would could be, we all still dealing with SHYT on daily basis.

If there is no such thing as "Murphy's Law" and we got perfect world, then we won't be needing insurance to protect us as much as they can.

only saying what on news today..i guess must be bits of cargo hold that pressurized bc horse etc travel in it..i read about people getting into wheel gears they mostly die

Wrong! If you had read my comment right on post # 2 would had seen this is what I said! I said 'WHAT IF' , I never called said he WAS a terrorist , you said that !

"Damn this is scary , what if that guy was a terrorist ??? " I said this !!!!!!

Its how I see, "Terrorist" was the only term you used to begin with.

Its like a snapshot, be careful what you say can cause other to think differently, or have different perspective. Just like that stupid drama over the color of cloth whether it is black, gold, white.
