Elderly cancer patient calls 911 because he has no food

You are just too black and white about things.....and, apparently, heartless....

No I'm not,,I can see you dialing 911 when you really need to. Like an intruder broke into your home or your kitchen caught on fire,Or you have chest pains and you cant breathe. But when i was explained about old man cant get up and get food i can understand. Not because McDonalds won't give you ur hamburger.

Yeah the joker should donate their body to science so they can see how he/she lived without a heart for so long.

Yeah i understand now ok?

Donations Pouring in for Elderly Man Who Called 911 for Food

Two days after an elderly man dialed 911 for food because he was hungry and couldn't move, his kitchen cabinets are overflowing with donations.

A 911 operator came to Clarence Blackmon's rescue this week after he called for help. The 81-year-old, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, had just returned home to an empty refrigerator after spending several months in the hospital, and he said he had no one else to turn to. The operator arrived with a box of groceries, and she made him a few ham sandwiches.

Several news outlets, including ABC News, wrote about the good deed, and food donations are pouring in, Blackmon said.

"They keep bringing it in by the armloads," he told ABC News. "My cupboards are full. I've never had such prosperity."

He has so much food, that he's called a food bank to share it with others.

"Simply, these are wonderful gifts," he said. "If I tried to consume all that's in my kitchen right now, what's in my cupboards, it would take me over a year!"

911 operator Marilyn Hinson told ABC affiliate WTVD that she wanted to help Blackmon because she understood his predicament.

"He was hungry," Hinson said. "I've been hungry. A lot of people can't say that, but I can, and I can't stand for anyone to be hungry."

oh jeez.... instead of donating food... they should pool in money together to get him a helper.

Remembering my grandfather...he raised all 6 of us until my mother came and got us...and when we left home, he was alone....In his middle 70's I believe....Not much $$...He happened to see a "Bell Ringer" for the Salvation Army one day...an elderly lady...he gave his donation....and "Love" took flight....:giggle:...not sure exactly how they got together (since I lived in another city at that time)...but they did get married and were very happy....He said her cooking was better than his...but he still made biscuits...Both are deceased now...but good to know that their later years were happy.

Wow. Glad he has a lot of food now. I agree with Jiro though, that I wish some of it were monetary donations to hire an aide to watch over him and get his needs addressed. Unfortunately this doesn't happen for many.

A visiting nurse is going to be seeing him twice a week and I am hoping the nurse will see that the poor guy needs a health aide everyday to help him with P/C cooking etc. If he can't get out of his chair to cook he sure can't take a shower on his own. Maybe some neighbors will help with his cooking at least I hope they will.

I feel he needs to be moved to a Assisted Living Facility....altho' there's a waiting list, some places a year or more...but it seems to be he would qualify on an emergency basis....But all depends if he is willing to go...some elderly won't move.

I agree and had posted that his doctor should had set this up for guy. He was in rehab and send home . I know insurance companies will only pay for a certain length of time to stay in rehab and it's true he may had wanted to be back home. Someone did not do their job in making sure the guy had food in his house before sending him home.

Also, another thing about this story is we don't know what this man told the hospital personnel about his living situation. He may have told them, just to get out of there, that he had all kinds of help at home, or was going to a relative's home or some such. Of course the hospital people should have made sure about his situation.

Maybe the guy did want to get back home but I know hospital are not in the habit of sending someone home if they're not able to care for their self . The person is sent to rehab if the doctor feel this will help and if not send to assisted living or get the a health aide to see the guy twice a day .
It's easier to get a person into rehab or assisted living while still in the hospital than when they're at home. I had a client that had a stroke while sitting in her chair , I found her that way and was told she to go the hospital so she could get into a nursing home faster. I agree we do not know the whole story but I doubt that guy would putt himself in such situation were he had no food and not be able to care for himself.
