Hello there.
My name is Rory Cameron. I am a 3rd year product design student at the university of Leeds, UK.

For my final year project I am devising an educational device for pre-school born deaf children. I have read some literature around the subject and I was wondering if I could gain anymore information on methods of teaching and problems hat may occur in trying to teach pre-school born deaf children.

I also read that born deaf children who are born to able parents can have problems with literacy levels when it comes to leaving school, dose anyone know any more on this subject?

Any replies will be much appreciated.

One small thing. Could you please say "deaf children born to hearing parents?" Deaf people are very able.

Hello agiain

Firstly,
sorry to Sallylou or any one else who may have taken offense to my wrong choice of words.

Second, thank you Calvin. there was some good information on those threads that i can now use for my project.

What I have found is much controversy surrounding how to educate a deaf child. Good luck to you and your project.

Could you elaborate anymore on where you have found controversy? and what aspects are controversial?
From the literature i have read, there seems to be a few conflicting ideas on how to educate a deaf child.

I would suggest going through the threads in the Deaf Education forum on this board. Make sure you set the search criteria to go back in time a ways. There you will find many threads on the subject. Let me know if you have any questions beyond that and I will share with you anything that I have learned. Disclaimer: I am no expert on the subject only a hearing father trying my best to make informed decisions about how to best educate my deaf child.

I am curious as to what this product for aiding in educating deaf children is. Can you elaborate?

well at the moment i'm still doing my own research into the area, but im quite interested in design a product for pre-school deaf children with non signing parents. a literacy aid to develop early reading but also sign language. so in a way, a little like the "leapfrog" reading products that are available, but a range for deaf pre-school children, so using purely visual stimuli. I'm still looking into how useful that kind of product would be and if there is a market for a product such as this, I.E. would people get such a product for their children.

do you have any comments on such an idea?

welcome.... but I do wonder what's up with people from UK studying about deaf people lately. First about discrimination, then about deaf driver, and now this. I don't mean to sound rude or anything but just wondering if deafness in the hype, that's all.
