So, I got an ear mold three days ago from a new audiologist (I just moved) and I’m already noticing issues.
It’s a silicone based, half-shell ear mold (which I’ve gotten in the past), but this time, the ear mold cane with a vent which I’ve never had.

I’m wondering if it’s causing the first issue… When I first put my HA on with my new ear mold, I immediately noticed that it sounded echo-y. The audiologist said that was because it was creating a better seal than I’ve had in my previous ear molds…

Also, I’m hearing constant ringing inside my ears (tinnitus) which I usually only get when I’m sick, and I’m not currently. It’s driving me mad.
The last and most confusing issue is that I feel like I’m having such a harder time understanding people but my husband feels that I can actually hear better than I did.

What gives?

Do you still have your old ear molds if yes can you still use them? If you can you could have the audiologist put them on the tubes if you can't do it. Or have the audiologist pug up the vent. I had some ear molds with a vent and I got too much feedback and had to have the vent pugged up ,and that help a lot.

What is the purpose/function of this vent, anyway?

You might be hearing a echo because you should of had your hearing aid adjusted to be suitable for a vent.

How deaf are you, are you meant to be having a vent?

I don't have vents as I'm too deaf but my last earmolds came with a pressure vent so I just got them to re make them without a vent.

You will feel like you are not hearing aids as well because the vent is making you loose some low frequencies which is volume so to you it'll sound like you lost some ability to hear as well. You could be picking more up as you are not getting as much volume so you are picking more clarity (clarity is high frequencies) up.

Hey guys,
Well... I was born with profound hearing loss so I've worn hearing aids my whole life. I've never had one with vents.

I don't like it. I keep feeling like I'm hearing white noise/almost feedback sounding all the time. I also keep feeling like I need to pop my ears to "hear" right again. I've given it three days so far and still haven't noticed my comfort level increasing with these ear molds.
I don't get it, just never had this issue before.

It's just frusturating because it took the audiologist and the earmold company 4 tries to get my hearing aid right. I have a silicone based half shell model that's in a skin tone color. They kept making it opaque and shiny even though I showed them exactly what I wanted. It finally took me calling the ear mold company myself to find out exactly what needs to be put on the order sheet. Also, the ear mold canal was way longer than I wanted to. So frustrating.

I'd change audiologist but there are only 2 others in my area and both are way way overpriced.

definitely get in touch with your audiologist and the earmold company and let them know you don't want the vent.

With a profound loss you shouldn't have a vent. If you don't want the earmolds remade as you like them but the vent, buy some dental stuff (not sure of name) and block the vent up, then you'll have better hearing.

the audiologist also might have a plug that can plug up the vent. with my former audie, a vent was added to my new earmold, lots of feedback.. he just stuck this little piece of flexible silicone and plugged up the vent,

If the problem is more than the vent, is it kosher to ask that the audiologist remake the mold at thier cost? Since they messed everything up from the material, color, canal length and the vent?

You said that you now had the perfect earmold apart from the vent so easier thing to do would be to block the vent up.

If you are happy to have to a earmold remade, go ahead make an appt with your audiologist. :)
