I don't take my molds old like I'm "supposed" to. I grab it by the tube and pull it out. I've been shown to slide my finger in between the mold and my ear to get it out, but i almost always have a sore in my ear and that just pushes the mold harder into my boo boo lol and that hurts so I don't do it.

Anyway last night I go to pull it out and it was like suctioned into my ear. When I pulled it it actually pulled my ear away from head and I could feeling it pulling on my ear drum, or something in my ears. it flipping hurt, it still hurts. I did have to slide my finger in between my mold and my ear to break the seal the suction had on it.

Is that odd? That's never happened before, could have been from the pressure changes during flight from Boston to Myrtle Beach?

I get that every day with my ear molds now. I thought it was just from well fitting ear molds?

I never had it before but had a rubbish Audi who couldn't make well fitting ear molds.

I doubt it. The person that did the impression either did a lousy job or the molds itself are over due for replacement.

Only if i wear my HA on while I was on the airplane either took off or land on, it surely hurts my ear big time due to extra pressure on it, it feels like a knife that cuts into my drum or something in my ear. So I did take my ha off when i get on the airplane and it didnt hurt. I did chew gum both, HA on or HA off but it did not help too much.

by the way, if your ear canal mold is too long, if so. it does hurt inside. I have a long ear canal mold as i made mistake telling to audiology, MORE push too far into my canal to make a new mold. OOPIES. I know my own ear ( like memory of my ear mold).

My last earmolds (which I'm planning to get replaced in the next few weeks) were initially made too long so I had them remade (at their cost, not mine). I hope I remember to tell the audi to make a note when ordering my new ones to not make them long. I think they do the long ones for profound loss, but if they're uncomfortable, then it doesn't help because you might not wear them.

Right. The small cotton with the thread is for protecting from the mold that goes into ear. That is where when you feel a little hurt, tell audiology, stop right there. Then the new mold will insert into your ear so the mold's ear canal should be OK. I made mistakes few times. If i feel hurt right there then will tell the audiology to pull it up a little as to where I dont feel any pain. me duh!

Apparently the audi can also put on the order form long, ?medium? or short. So they don't go just by the impression that was made. But, yeah, if there's any pain when they put the stuff in, let them know.

This is the first time I've had long ear molds as I found them uncomfortable but for feedback problems, I now need them. The long ones go past the 2nd bend in the ear, I've been told. Very snug! :)

I think that's why she ordered the long ones for me the last time, but, so far the shorter ones are working ok regarding feedback. I have been having feedback lately which is why I'm getting new molds. One of my molds is 19 months old...can you believe that? The other one is just over a year because it had cracked near the tube and I needed to get it replaced, though she told me later that she probably could have just glued it.

Has it been thrown out could you have her glue it and keep it as a spare?

19 months is very good especially for severe to profound losses. I really think it all depends on how good they squeeze the goo into the ear as well. My ones for this new audi are great, never had well fitting molds like this time.

How do you find getting molds done at different times? I keep thinking to myself, I will do this to save money but it never happens :) Do you get the same color, or do you go for different colors?

My molds always match, though, when I got the one done because of the crack, I could tell a slight difference since they were made about 7 months apart. These are clear with blue glitter and I'll probably go with them again.

The suction does sound like a pressure issue. If you were just on a plane, might make sense. :)

Regarding the long ear canal on the molds -- when I have mine made, they are always made too long. Then, when I go to pick them up and make sure they fit well, they are always too long. The audi files them down on the spot to a level I'm comfortable with. I like that very much. Better than too short to begin with, otherwise they'd have to be re-made then. The only time I experience ear soreness is actually with the tube itself -- never the earmold -- the tube being too long and it needs to be shortened. I'll do it myself at home if need be. I always replace my own tubes as it is.

I'm betting that since you never had that problem before, that it was the change in pressure from flying. I'm having this problem right now where my mold gets a suction in my ear canal, so sometimes when I smile or chew, etc, the mold will "pull" the eardrum out, which is VERY painful as I just had surgery on my eardrums last week.

that's funny, I had something like that where the sound from my left ear is way off so I just let it out a bit

OUCH!! I can imagine!! it hurt me and there isn't even anything going on with ear drums!

My molds are still fairly new, got them in June. Real snug, and the canal part on my right one is looong, I had to have him shave it down because it was making a sore inside my ear canal, I couldn't even smile without it causing pain. I get a little suction if my ear gets sweaty, but this was A LOT of suction!! My ear drum is still sore :(

Nothing should be that tight; the molds should be comfortable to the point that you don't even notice them. If I had to shave them down, I'd drive back to the audi and get another impression made. Sounds like it wasn't made properly, so between that and the air pressure from the flight, you had pain....and no wonder.....

hi

I fly a lot and have worn hearing aids for nearly forty years- these are things that I have learned. I do not get sore places in my ears - I do if I do not do these things. I am not telling anyone what they should do. I am still up for learning new things. Not everything works for everybody.
___
I do not use the silicone earmolds. The bacteria does not clean off of them well enough.
___
I like the longer mold into the ear and get it trimmed back if it is bothering me.
___
I have the earmold drilled with a hole from outside to inside whole length. I find a size wider hole than the audi likes works best for me. Too large is bad.
This helps keep moisture from building up in my ears and allows for pressure changes.
___
I keep my inside ears dry by using two Q-tips every time I shower.
___
I use an alcohol swab from the foil package like people who give themselves shots use. I clean the earmolds every single time they go into my ears. Every now and then I use the 91% or 99% alcohol, I dribble a little bit onto the swab and clean the mold. The packaged swabs are only around 70%.
___
I use the hearing aid dryer with the blue light.
___
If there is any itchiness in my ear at all I use the 91% or 99% alcohol on a Q-tip and twirl it in my ear where the earmold goes in my ear.
___
If I am going to fly I take an antihistimine an hour before.
___
I remove my hearing aids before takeoff. I put in EAR PLANES from Walmart- I clean them first with the alcohol swabs I carry with me all the time. I chew gum until the plane is at full ascent- usually I keep the earplanes in to cut down on the noise even though it is way too late for that. They can come out though until descent.
When descent time comes in go those cleaned ear planes, I chew gum. The ear planes can come out after landing to put in the hearing aids after of course I have cleaned the molds with an alcohol swab.
The ear planes do a good job of regulating the air pressure- no pain.
___
That is all. I know I sound like a fussbudget on the cleaning but it is a habit and it works. Again this is just what I do and have done for many years. There are always new things to learn. People have lots of good ideas.

I HATE these molds, they are the weirdest molds I ever had. I posted pictures of them not long after I got them, they have a bit of extra mold at the top that curves under that groove in your ear at the very front. hmmm that is hard to explain when I don't know the terminology of all the curvery parts of your outer ear.

My favorite molds were made by the audi at Costco a few years ago! Yes weird I know, the guy at Costco, I swear. I don't have aids from there, but I can still have molds made by them and I get my batteries there. I'm just not sure if they'll do them up for me with no vents, I can't have vents anymore. The one's I got from Costco had a fairly large vent hole and they came with a bunch of plugs for it so you could make the vent different sizes. Hmmm now that I'm thinking about vents....I bet that doesn't help with whole ear mold getting suctioned into your ear thing.......

The suction was so strong I expected it to make a popping sound like when you open a jar with a vacuum sealed lid hahahaha well, I suppose after I got the mold out if it did make a popping sound I wouldn't hear it at that point anyway!
