Today I was moody for seafood dinner. I went to Stop and Shop a large grocery store. I took the cart and went to get some items. Then there I was looking at the clams and Scallops. Something bothers me at fish fillets laid out on ice area, :hmm: and I looked closer it from the display case. I was so dumbfounded  I see that they had a white fillet laid out on ice. I saw a little white thin worm ***not a maggot squirm*** across the fillet. I alerted the butcher. He looked at it and then looked at me. He made his face grin and took it away from display to backroom. He and another employment inspection the fish display. :ugh: I feel not good and Change mind that I do not moody for seafood dinner tonight! :squint: Consequently, I went to into the ail and abandon the cart and then left the store. I could not even finish my shopping. :(

I went to home and do not feel good! Therefore, I saw my best friend was online. I aim to her about worm. She was laughs and her husband who working at a navy. He was typing and explains. :squint:

Happen Worms found often in fish at grocery. It is called Anisakis :dunno2:
It is usually in fish that has been shipped with an effected piece of fish in order to warm of a temperature. Her husband said Not worrier, and it is not hurt people! :ugh:

was the worm already dead? it was probably a roundworm of some kind. if you cook the fish, there's nothing to worry about. parasites are only a danger if you eat fish raw. if fish are caught with worms in them, all they can do is hopefully find and remove them in the store before they set it out. but most parasites lay thousands and thousands of eggs, so an infected fish like that will not only have a huge bulging worm but far more invisible dangers.

technically, if you cook it well you'll be fine, but it's disgusting nonetheless. at the very least, buy your produce elsewhere, but i would shop somewhere else entirely.

Anisakiasis
Anisakid larvae in the body cavity of a herring (Clupea harengus)
Anisakid larvae in the body cavity of a herring (Clupea harengus)

Anisakiasis is the disease caused by infection with Anisakis worms. It is frequently reported in areas of the world where fish is consumed raw, lightly pickled or salted. The areas of highest prevalence are Scandinavia (from cod livers), Japan (after eating sushi and sashimi), the Netherlands (by eating infected fermented herrings (Maatjes)), and along the Pacific coast of South America (from eating ceviche). Heating to 60 °C, or freezing to below −20 °C is an effective method of killing Anisakis.

Within hours after ingestion of infective larvae, violent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur. Occasionally the larvae are coughed up. If the larvae pass into the bowel, a severe eosinophilic granulomatous response may also occur 1 to 2 weeks following infection, causing symptoms mimicking Crohn's disease.

Diagnosis can be made by gastroscopic examination during which the 2 cm larvae are visualized and removed, or by histopathologic examination of tissue removed at biopsy or during surgery.

Humans are thought to be more at risk of Anisakiasis from eating farmed fish than wild fish.

Many countries require all types of fish with potential risk intended for raw consumption to be previously frozen to kill parasites.

[edit] Allergic reactions

Even when throroughly cooked Anisakis pose a health risk to humans. Anisakids (and related species such as the sealworm, Pseudoterranova spp., and the codworm Hysterothylacium aduncum) release a number of biochemicals into the surrounding tissues when they infect a fish. They are also often consumed whole, accidentally, inside a fillet of fish.

People who are sensitized to nematodes can have severe anaphylactic reactions after eating fish which have been infected with Anisakis spp. This is often confused with a fish or shellfish allergy, as the allergenic components of Anisakids are difficult to test for and often produce a reaction in tests for other allergens.

I would change my store. And maybe never eat fish again.

Lot of seafoods have sea parasites......harmless to humans. One can soak fillets in water mix with lemon juice for some time.....it kills them and they extract themselves........rinse.....cook well enough......not a fan of sushi....but they are fish parasites harmless to humans

cowpuppy, see what bottesini says... that type of parasites is harmful to humans! eh

:eek3: Thats really disgusting!
I cant believe that you saw the disgusting worm on the
fish at the store!
Thanks to you, Phillips, i will not ever, eat fish again......

...i feeel sick............
:barf:

this is absolutely untrue. if this logic worked, then mad cow disease would not affect humans, because "it's obviously just for cows and harmless to humans"

ridiculous. you're never going to eat fish for the rest of your life because someone saw a worm in a fish? give me a break. you can always check it yourself before you cook it.

Ever gone fishing? The fish ate the worm which got the fish on the hook...where did the worm go? Yummy fish = Yummy worm.

not necessarily. bait worms, for one, probably don't even reach the stomach of a caught fish, since the fish are effectively dead as soon as they bite the hook. they certainly don't have time to swallow and digest a worm before they're reeled in and suffocate.

second, when and if fish eat worms, they will most likely be annelids (earthworms - these are used for bait) which would pass through the digestive system and give nutrition. flat- and roundworm parasites, on the other hand, live in the flesh or intestine, are not digested, and take nutrition from the fish. i haven't gone out of my way to taste a parasite-infected fish to compare it to a normal fish, but i would imagine they are smaller, weaker and maybe even taste bad. if you contracted a parasite (let's say a tapeworm) you would lose quite a bit of weight because they eat a lot of your digested food before you get the chance to use it as your own food source (they can grow obscenely long, i don't remember exactly how long but it's more than 10 feet)

when you eat a cheeseburger, it ends up as energy and waste, you don't find huge chunks of intact cheeseburger hanging out in your muscles and liver.

lol! how i do that? take the freakin fish apart and look for the nasty
worms?? I was kidding about not eating the fish again...of course,
if you cook the fish thoroughly, it will be fine. Same thing with hamburger
you have to thoroughly cook it before eating it cuz of E-Coli thing..
But one thing for sure...i absolutely WILL NOT EAT ANY RAW FISH, LIKE
SUSHI!!...ewwww...i cant trust it to be fresh...

you could look at it
turn it over
look at it some more
make an incision or two with a knife
look inside the fillet
and there we are.
a giant parasitic worm only has so many places to hide
it won't be hiding in some infinitesimally small cranny.
