Erm. isn't that dry-brik stuff Silca gel...? Because if it is... Silca gel comes pretty cheap... Even if it isn't it does the same function. Removes moisture.

I think that with using as adeduction on taxes you would have to be using the long form and itemized deductions. then when it comes to deductions I think you have to choose between the standard deduction or itemized. Something like that. If you file short form you don't do deductions like that.

jag is correct its on itemize deductions under medical expenses. and yeah if you only use that as ur itemize deductions then its not worth it, you would rather standard deduction. however if you have mortgage interest, medical expenses, even how many miles you drive to doctor does count in medical expenses. there's so many itemize deductions you can take advantage of.. however many people in low-income range doesn't meet the standard deductions so standard deductions is best choice.

Just took my left hearing aid to audiologist to repair "channel button" under warranty. When I picked it up, was told problem was caused by moisture, and that it will cost $400 for same repair once warranty expires.

Was then told about "Dry & Store", which they sell for $225, which is supposed to prevent the moisture-driven repair.

Paid $5,200 for two inner ear hearing aids, which I think is steep based on the amount of material that comprises this product. It comes with a 2 year warranty. I believe for that price, they should have come with "Dry & Store".

Is it me, or does it appear to others I am being hosed?

I don't have a dry and store kit but my implant came with a drying kit that I use to store my speech processor and I use that every night.

A lot of people don't use their dry and store machines. Maybe you could buy one off ebay? I just did a search for you and here is one for $87 + postage

They are now selling the upgrade version called the Dri Brik II

I use it all the time as perspiration can't be avoided. I've used CI socks (a type of nylon enclosure), they don't last long though.

I don't know why a thimble of rice put in a Rubbermaid container with your appliance wouldn't work.

We hardly use it. Here in Norway, it is quite humid, but the BTE's do not have a problem with it. Guess being "splash-proof" protects them really well.
When traveling, we don't take the whole kit. We use a little container, put a brick in it and the CI's over that.

The wear and tear sounds like Lotte's coils. (Have to make a picture of that....)
But we believe it's from the intensive use. Lotte has the BTE's on the shoulders, and when they fall off, she puts them on herself. There's some pulling and stretching involved...

Cloggy - I've reported the exact same problem to Cochlear on 4 occasions and had to get them to send me replacement coils because of the sheathing splitting. Its a known "bug" and my Audie said its something they will have to fix soon!

Also, in order to claim medical deductions, separate from itemizing, your total medical expenses have to exceed 7.5 % of your Adjusted Gross Income. If your income is low, that isn't usually a problem, but if it is average or above average that can be a lot.

Check on the FSA (Flexible Spending Account) with your employer -- the rule is usually if you can deduct it, you can also put it through a FSA account -- then you are paying for it with pre-tax $$, which is the same as paying for it with post-tax $$ and deducting it. This is an especially good option if you can't use the deductions for some reason.

Of course this is not tax advice, just a lot of "been there, done that"

I think they have already fixed it. I had the same problem with the coils splitting and they sent me a replacement. I noticed that it was different, the casing felt tougher to the touch and so far it hasn't split, fingers crossed!

That's good to hear, but I'm sure that Lotte's abuse cannot match the way you girls are treating the coil-wire.
And - Lotte is using the longest coil.

my dry and store broke and i have no idea what to do.. i called the company which my warranty is over for it because i had it for more than a year.

and they suggust to replace it for $80 but then i have to send back the old ones.. which is costing me more because of the shipping and handling to send back.

so i'm left out with a broken dry and store.. and just let my CI deal with itself.. gee..

Sorry to hear that. I do hear that some people never use theirs at all and do not have any moisture problems. I wonder if there is any home made, cheapo solutions that you could use while you save up? Maybe ask your audie if he/she has any suggestions?
