Doorbell which sends photo of who is at door

The doorbell will work with an app on your mobile phone.

I think there should be motion-detect snapshot option in addition to a snapshot when the doorbell is pressed. I know this can be achieved even with a simple webcam and a snapshot comparison algorithm... but I thought it would be useful for:.............

I wonder if home security services like ADT haven't already made something like this.

Yes, all that technology exists. Money is what's preventing most of us from having it.

There are motion detection systems that enable video recording, and capture the exact time frames, etc, and can email or text you a video or photo file.

As for the OP doing a DIY project: You can get something to "trigger" a remote camera mounted outside to either record or take a snapshot. Software can be easily developed in a PC using VB or another program to do whatever you want. IF (infrared) motion sensors are a bad idea to use outside, as you will get many false alarms. Proximity sensors, like the ones used on garage door openers, would be ideal.

I have spent countless hours doing troubleshooting on 600 motion sensors in a school building since there are numerous false alarms, and have come to the conclusion that 'you get what you pay for'. Buy substandard equipment, and you get substandard performance.

Good luck and let us know the end result.

If the OP can KISS his system it will sell. Too many remotes are too complicated to be useful for the non electrican. I would not want a whole security system like ADT when I just want a pic or vid of who's out there

Can I say I like how people are saying, "Wow I wish there was something like that!" to be followed by people saying, "yeah there's already a product that does this" lol

I believe the one that I saw on tv also had an option to speak to the person at the door like an intercom and I don't member the name of the product it was a while ago and I don't have cable anymore to cut down on house costs. I also can't member if it was all in one or doorbell and camera in another spot...sorry :/

X10.com - VideoDoor ID Wireless Intercom Doorbell System with Handheld Monitor

Here is a similar one already available. Not very expensive either, surprisingly.

For me personally, I see two problems with this. One, it uses sound to get your attention. Two, not sure the 100 ft range would help if I'm in the back yard.

The OP is working on something to send the pic to cell phones. I have my cell phone set up to vibrate when receiving texts, etc. And I would be able to receive the pic anywhere - even if I'm next door visiting my neighbor.
