Flyball is nuts...controlled chaos. I've watched at some of the local competitions. The dogs are super-revved up. The amount of herding-type and Lab-mix type dogs is no accident - these are dogs that are insane about ball and about activity and who would generally not do well in an average "pet" home. There aren't many Rotties in Flyball but my youngest actually would probably make a good participant in the more local and "for fun" level of Flyball, as she does LOVE ball and retrieves naturally, which is not common for a Rottie; she's also fast and little for the breed. But with her bad knee - even after it's repaired, not sure it's an activity she should try.
I'm glad you posted that, Whatdidyousay!
My lab would definitely participate in this as she is obsessed with any balls. My pit bull would just sit there and ignore the ball. She has no interest in chasing after balls or anything except for cats, birds, squirrels, or light.
You're right, I thought this a very nice thing to post after all that news, too.
Shel, I remember my dear, gentle Black Lab boy who also loved balls, of course.
He like many Labs, retrieved naturally and played ball until he was probably about 11 or 12. He had terrible hips from what was probably a very young age <at least 2, when we did the x-rays> but that didn't stop him from chasing balls, and squirrels, rabbits, birds, raccoons....
I imagined how happy Finlay would be at seeing all those tennis balls around a tennis court, WDYS!....or what about all the golf balls on a golf course!
