Dog dies after saving kids from pitbulls

Dog dies after saving kids from pitbulls
Wednesday May 2 06:51 AEST

Feisty Jack Russell terrier George has died after saving five children from a mauling by two savage pitbulls in New Zealand.

The tiny dog leapt to the defence of the children - aged between four and 11 - when the two rogue pitbulls threatened them in the Taranaki township of Manaia on Sunday.

The attack was the final straw for the South Taranaki District Council, which says it intends hunting down all dangerous and unregistered dogs and neutering them.

Richard Rosewarne, 11, said the pitbulls came up from behind and were going for his brother, Darryl Wilson, 4.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him - one on the head and the other on the back," he told the Taranaki Daily News.

"We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But nine-year-old George was so badly ripped apart he had to be put down.

Vet Steven Hopkinson, of South Taranaki Animal Health Services, said the injuries were the worst he had seen.

George's owner, Alan Gay, 69, said pitbulls should be banned.

"They're killers and it comes from them being bred for fighting."

Mr Gay lives alone and George had been his faithful companion for about seven years.

The dogs disappeared after the attack, but dog rangers removed two pitbulls from a Manaia property.

South Taranaki environment services manager Graham Young said he was fairly certain the dogs were involved in Sunday's attack.

They have been impounded awaiting destruction. The council would also be looking to prosecute the owners, Mr Young said.

The attacks have prompted the council to introduce desexing of aggressive dogs, which it is empowered to take under the Dog Control Act.

Oh, this is so sad! :( I never knew JRT have the ability to fight off those kind of dogs in order to save people's lives. This dog died a hero!

This also boost a confidence in me to adopt that Deaf JRT, which I posted somewhere in this topic, & it is good to know JRT can do the impossible despite of their size! :)

I know people have always thought of pitbulls as demonic breeds, but one can be sweet if their owner trains it right. My mom's deceased best friend had a pitbull, and it never harm anyone. Of course, I would approach ANY pitbulls with cautions because of their reputations. Actually, I would think twice before I approach any dogs....including chihuahua. :) :) :) Never know they might bite your head off! :)

Thanks for sharing this news and yes I have heard about this story as it is in my country and it does saddened me to see all this bad story of dogs mauling. It has become so bad lately that last week a woman died from two dogs mauled her and just a few days ago two children were attacked by a pitbull and a staffy. They are thinking of toughening the dog laws here by fining the owners $20,000 and also to destroy dogs or maybe get them banned from the country. It is sad.

Aww :( It's very sad of what happened to that poor Jack Russell

pit bulls are by nature animal aggressive and their bite is worse than their barks. Once they start on something, they will finish it. I know from research. :(

Information on how to avoid dog attacks: preventing and avoiding dog bites Be a responsible dog owner. License your dog as required by law, and provide regular veterinary care, including rabies vaccinations. For everyone's safety, don't allow your dog to roam alone. Make your dog a member of your family: Dogs who spend a great deal of time alone in the backyard or tied on a chain often become dangerous. Dogs who are well-socialized and supervised are much less likely to bite.

Awww, Thanks to George (JRT) for saving the kids' life! I have a Jack Russell and he is very protective of my family. If it wasn't for George, the youngest could have died. its amazing.

Amazing that little dog that could....he died for the kids.

Lastest news another dog mauling today a 3 years old boy was attacked by a pitbull dog and he is in hospital with huge bites on his legs. Owner are now being charged and fined. Dog have been destroyed. In the last two weeks we have had 6 maulings done by either pitbulls or staffy dogs. It so sad!!

Jack Russell terriers are cute little fiesty dogs. This one is a brave hero to protect the little boys.

My sister have a JT dog for her children and the dog have more energy than the Energizer Bunny!!
