Does this happen often???

My teacher who teaches us sign language told us a story. In her upper classes she takes her sign students out to eat. They are not allowed to talk at all. Only signs and fingerspell. They ahve to ignore hearing people the best they can. She said there were construction workers coming into eat. they kept making fun of them. There was also a guy who followed one of the students around saying mean things to them real loud. they had no idea that these were all hearing people who knew sign language. The teacher told the resturant and they made the men leave. i just find it crazy that people would act so horrible! Why would you do something like that?!?!? These were grown men who should know better! I was just wondering if anyone else has had an experience simlar. Does it happen often? I just don't know what is wrong with people. If you don't like someone i think you should just keep it to yourself not following them around saying awful remarks! I found this really mean and it makes me what to try this. It would be hard not to say something back for me but the students pretended not to hear. the teacher just wanted them to see what some deaf have to go through. Does anyone else have some awful stories like this?

Yes, it is VERY common!! My parents are deaf and my siblings are hearing. They (siblings) got upset whenever people make fun of their deaf parents. As for me, I have caught some hearing kids in the act who made fun of me (I am deaf myself) behind my back. It is COMMON! We are used to it!

Hell yea.

When I was young, my mom told me to not use sign language whenever we go to places. At that time she doesn't know sign language (she finally took ASL class when I got older). I dont blame her because she dont like people gawking or snickering at us.

I think hearing people are mocking ASL users because either - 1.) hearing people are jealous that they cannot overhead what ASL users are saying 2.) they re just fool bigots who have nothing better to put down other people. bunch of idiots.

As for us - deaf people - it s good thing that we re unable to not hear slur remarks

Wow, these men were definitely acting like a bunch of fools....I haven't experience anything like this b4, unless it might have happened behind my back, but oh well I'm deaf, I'm really sorry to hear what your teacher and her students went through that day, this is soo unacceptable....

well I am sorry you guys have to go through that.
I get people making fun of me and my fiance a lot. Mainly because we usually have unnatural hair colors. like pink,purple,blue LOL. Right now it is black though. But I have an anger problem for things like that. So I just let that stuff bother me. i usually just smile real big and wave to make them uncomfortable or i say why don't you stare some more!!!!! LOL
I know I should ignore it but after 20 people does it, it becomes old.

But people have no respect.
It is awful.
My granny took care of some deaf elederly people and I remember some people made fun of them. i always was so mad at people. But I am glad most of you can just ignore it. I just wish people were nicer

Yea it happened and then I turned and tell them that they have 50/50 chances to become handicapped in their lifetime. They were shocked and ran away from me.

Construction folks are anything but mature. My uncle was one, and a few of my cousins too. Theyre all like that. And people need to grow thick skin too.

Boy some folks gonna have to try to be rude and gawking and etc... I have had to deal with that in school for many years and etc.. but some kids does take the time to ask me what I am signing and fingerspelling and etc.. some kids I have taught them how to fingerspelling good..so I do get along with some of them and we do joke around... but the other folks need to learn how to appreciate the fact that other deaf folks have to communicate via sign language and etc.. they dont know what the heck it is to be deaf and having to talk via sign language!!

OH yeah, it happened, back in Oklahoma where I was from, lot of deaf friends of mine went out to eat. Don't know what"s going on. We were signing. The guy moved to other table across from us, talking with mockery looks with the ladies next table from us, and the ladies moved another table. Then there were hearing group of kids came in. Then sit behind me (next table behind me). The same guy moved another again. Somehow, teenage guy, got out angry, grabbed the man, and hold on to that guy push him down on our table, we have know idea what happen, and that teenage guy signed and yelled at the guy and said, I have a sister who is deaf and you have a problem? (with angry remarks). And the manager of the restraunt, came and wonder what isgoing on, and the teenager told him what the guy said and did. So the manaager threw the guy out, then trying to get in again, and threw him out again and locked the door. And he start banging on the window, and the manager called the police, but the man gone already, couldnt identify who he is and the teenager said to us, " I'm sorry I scared you all (in ASL)." We told him we totally appreciate it what you have done and amazed find out he has a deaf sister. It's like a perfect timing for them to came by to prevent constant bickering. It does happen. Many deaf shared their experience and deaf parent's kid(s) shared what has happen. They are just ignorant people who does not or have not seen deaf people even overlook or could be prejudice. There are varies.

A lot of people have thick skin against insults, but even the thickest skin won't protect them at times. I generally brush off insults, but sometimes you get fed up with them and have to say something. That's the way Life works.. You can't repress your anger all the time at the insults that are hurled your way. Sometimes you have to fight back.

Something like that just happened 2 days ago at DPHH (Deaf Professional Happy Hour). My husband and I went and we were enjoying ourselves signing away until my husband turned around and got into a heated conversation with some hearing people (my husband is hearing). It looked like they were going to get into a physical fight and I kept telling him to come on..let's go to another place. I suspected it had something to do with them mocking deaf people. So, we move to a different area of the bar and I asked my husband what happened. He said that those group of guys were talking so loudy saying that deaf people should belong in insitutions and that deaf people drain taxpayers' money by demanding all those services. My husband asked him what was his problem. The guy said that he thinks deaf people shouldnt be in public. OOOH my husband really got into it and told the guy if he doesnt watch his mouth, there will be serious consequences and the guy said deaf whore. Finally my husband stopped and realized that it wasnt worth the risk of going to jail and listened to me. Wow...

yes its common.. sigh... for those who doesnt know that deaf people can do anything except hear are ignorants.. they just dont know better... i just ignore them and say stupid things about hearing people like for example.. ( i am hard of hearing) i was talking.. said good thing i know sign language and its fun to use it when hearing people CANT understand us.. being scarstic.. then sign to them... CAN U UNDERSTAND THAT HUH?? in sign language no voice... that made them MAD.. i asked them can u undy me? they said no.. i said TOO BAD... LOL.. they gulped and walked away.... hehehe.. deserve them right....
