Do you think Ernie and Bert are Gay!!??

'They Don't Exist Below the Waist'
The controversy hit a fever pitch in 1994, when the Rev. Joseph Chambers called for the characters to be banned.

"They share clothes, eat and cook together and have blatantly effeminate characteristics. In one show Bert teaches Ernie how to sew. In another they tend plants together," the Southern evangelist said on his radio show. "If this isn't meant to represent a homosexual union, I can't imagine what it's supposed to represent."

Talk about being close-minded and stupid of that priest. It is not his place to make that decision whether they should be banned or not.

I honestly don't care if Bert & Ernie are gay/not. It's a kids show. It's meant for kids. If overbearing parents have nothing better to do than question two puppets' sexuality, then they are the ones with issues and not Sesame Street.

Not only that they have issues, but they are plain idiots! :giggle:

hmm, I don't think he is asking them to be banned. But just warning those who do watch it. It's no different than pastors telling christian pulpits that they shouldn't be going out to "Girls, Girls, Girls" bars. but yeah, some do go a little overboard.

And even though it seem like a ban, but it isn't. It is people writing a complaint to the company to change. It is up to the company if they want to ban it or not. Just like people write to complaint about anything. Like Donald Trump When lost a lot of viewers because he "fired' a celebrity because she was still paying the debt of DUI in her state even though she got permission from the judge that she could attend his show. Or like How some people (PETA people) quit watching "Amazing Race" because they allow people perform a task that involve animals . No one is involving the gov't cops in this situation. They are simply ask to change it. If a company decide to leave it as it is, it is his choice. He will not be fined or go to jail over it.

Hmph. Even if they could be, it would not make them bad persons or bad role models. I love them whatever they are, creative, sensitive, sharing, giving and funny muppets. Think as you will, they are cute objects. My favorite is Beaker anyhow. This week anyway.

Nov. 9) -- Many stars have had to fight persistent rumors about their sexuality. And in that way, Ernie and Bert are no different than John Travolta and Tom Cruise.

I've recounted the stories about the infamous "Ernie and Bert are gay" rumor probably more times than Count Von Count can count. But with "Sesame Street" celebrating its 40th anniversary on Tuesday, I'm going to take it as an opportunity to rehash that same silly rumor one more time.

Bongarts/Getty ImagesOf course, the sexuality of other cartoon characters has come into question over the years. Anti-gay groups have accused SpongeBob SquarePants and Tinky Winky of the "Teletubbies" of harboring a homosexual agenda, even while most people with half a brain were saying, "They're just children's characters."

Bert and Ernie's lifestyle choices, however, didn't help matters. They share a room, and a bedroom, if not a bed. They bicker like husband and wife. They frequently break out in song. One has a curious obsession with his rubber ducky.

From the very first "Sesame Street" episode, Ernie can be seen taking a bath with Bert in the room -- and that makes a lot of guys uncomfortable.

At one point, the Children's Television Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind "Sesame Street," even issued a denial.

"Bert and Ernie, who've been on Sesame Street for 25 years, do not portray a gay couple, and there are no plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans," the organization said in a statement. "Like all the Muppets created for 'Sesame Street,' they were designed to help educate preschoolers. Bert and Ernie are characters who help demonstrate to children that despite their differences, they can be good friends."

Years later, Gary Knell, president of Children's Television Workshop successor Sesame Workshop, would say, "They are not gay. They are not straight. ... They don't exist below the waist."
I have never heard of anything so stupid , thinking Ernie and Bert are Gay! How are they going to do anything and they are puppets!

I wonder why everyone have to ask everyone if they are gay or not?

Even people who support them go around asking other people if they are gay. I had a co-worker,who was very sweet and I miss him dearly because he died of diabetes, I did wonder about his sexuality, but wouldn't dare to ask out of fear that I could offend him. But someone eventually told me he is gay. Nowadays, people think they can ask all they want... or think all they want (they go around gossiping to other people saying "I think he is gay") . Even if they are supporters of gay. If they think someone is gay, they will openly say so. They don't care about other people's reputation of being straight (especially to women). I wouldn't dare say anything what I thought or ask unless a person voluntary to say so. It is just as bad as estimating someone's age because of their look.

CJB, let me guess. You have a lot of toasters? You've been busy! :laugh2:

I never thought Ernie and Bert were gay when I was growing up...

I never thought about the existence of homosexuality until like... grade seven or grade eight.
Then how would you explain this.

If Bert and Ernie are gay then Batman and Robin must be gay too. :giggle:

And before anybody asks... Yes.. it appears that Big Bird is gay too.

"Rev. Joseph Chambers called for the characters to be banned." The guy was
the puppets to be banned! I think he need to chill out! He has real sexual hang ups to be worried about some silly puppets being gay!

Heh that's so sweet that two men can show affection for each other! Batman and Robin are perfect for each other. ;)

I seen article saying he called them to be banned, but I don't see him saying that... not yet anyway. But I wouldn't be surprised if he did as they don't like prostitution being protrayed on children public network either... but there is no evidences B&E are gay so I don't think he should have request to them be banned.

pastors will preach about being "Worldly" to his pulpits so if he did preach it for his listeners only, I wouldn't be surprised by that either.

Who was it that said Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick were gay? If anyone on that cartoon is gay, it's clearly Squidward.
