The indignities Moari have been treated better in recent history than mainstream Disabled Students in the mainstream.

At least both Deaf and Moari students have access to specialist education/units and schools.

The Ministry of education closed the specialist Cerebral Palsy boarding school which was able to meet the range of needs of cerebral Palsy students

Students who don't meet MOEs credia are screwed in this country. My parents pulled my ORRS funding because my ****wit conductor told them to.

yes, this indeed gives a bad message to hearing people about Deaf culture, because with this 'fallback attitudes' implies Deaf culture is like a broken language 'fit' only for 'failures', like its not 'fit' for way of life as in Being Deaf.
Like Being DEAF is NOT the same as being Linguistically DEAD.
But it seems to be so for the VAC administrators, Special Education Services, and associated BOT's members,etc etc etc

You missed my point all together as a Deafblind person I want to live in a world where I can go to a restaurant and order my meal in NZSL and the waiter be able tell me the specials in NZSL. Isn't that the point of the NZSL bill/law?

I do 'know' that the woman who 'found it/runs it' went and gatecrashed a Deaf Studies course and obtain the cert in Deaf studies, just to get excuses..

agreed it does sound . why would a Highschool TOD need to know how teach villnia Deaf to read so the child needs to be placed in a retard room with a signing teacher aid till shes up to year level and then moved back to the Deaf Unit

yes, because principally, it is supposed to be Deaf people to teach sign, not hearing.

Also, if you read back to earlier parts of this thread Deafdyke has explained it well that parent of Downs (who are also deaf) are in denial of having a Downs, as it is 'much better for them to think of their child as 'only Deaf' and the bitch brought alot of problems to the Deaf community, embarrassment and controlling are some of these, but deeper problem is that, what sort of message does it gives to hearing society about Deaf? are we really this slow? and why is that Down in Deaf unit only to communicate but still can't read ESPECIALLY at High school levels, apparently no better than a 5 yo hearing and that girl is now 13 or 14...its a disgrace.

I DON'T LIKE Inclusion as a philosophy, it is NOT real, it is NOT practical, it is NOT right and finally it is NOT being nice, it is more about being in denial.

People got to get REAL about it...and the worst thing about the VTYH is they are WASTING state funding on some useless bullshit which otherwise could have be put towards Deaf professionals to Deaf students whose are in isolation around the country, that would get far more results for the money, and at same time have that Downs ( esp the low functioning ones) placed back in the special classes where there is no real difference in outcomes, except they are under proper supervision.

Grummer.....agreed 100%!!!!!!! There are some Down's/ sidewalk crack (ie not classicly mentally disabled but still not classicly resource room LD) kids who MIGHT be able to function well in a "just" dhh classroom....but overall kids with intellectucal disabilties need a SPECIALIZED (NOT "segregated") placement/program.......I spent a few days with some mentally disabled young adults this past week.In that time I witnessed multiple misunderstandings and strange out of kilter meltdowns..Basicly the classic stereotype of mental disabilty...it just seems like the teachers/aides would spend most of their time trying to get the mentally disabled kid to try to understand a concept that is beyond their understanding or trying to get them to calm down after a meltdown,rather then actually teaching.....I also want to say that a lot of the activities and stuff were really watered down...it really wasn't fun for those of us who are more mildly affected....being all inclusively with mental disabilty pretty much guarentees that content/activities etc will be watered down.....and how is that fair to the on par kids?

thats a situation faced by many disabled and deaf (and i believe Deaf ARE disabled, because disability got nothing to do with the body or senses its the way society assumes they have rights to make decision 'for you'... that is impaired bodied people are controlled...

because i have Done 2 post grad papers on Disability Studies, and plan to do a lot more

Sorry, so do I!...but also get pissed when people I'm a whiner doing nothing, not so, I am finishing a PG Diploma, then hopping on to a Masters next years. While study takes up a lot of my time and energy (its freakn hard!) my English is terrible, and yet I'm NOT giving up...I made a choice between study for Rights, or earning good money and just forget about it...I chose the hard one, stay poor, and study Hard, its harder than 'working', its not a 9 to 5 thing its 24/7...no make it 25/8 thing!
