McCormick - Toss Old Spices Seasonally (T.O.S.S.)

Im glad you posted this. Now Im going to clean out my spice cupboard. I have so many...I know I need to toss out most of them, knowing now that we were supposed to only keep spices up to a few years.

You are welcome and God Bless !!!!!

Yeah and they are trying to drum up more sales of their spices because those folks still have them in their cupboards. hehehe..

You know that kind of things doesn't happen in the past. hmm.

only the cook can tell if need fresh spice if any goes stale.

Have you noticed the PRICE of spices lately??! I just paid almost $8.00 for a small jar of dill weed. Ugh. I think Boult is right, someone is trying to con us all into purchasing new spices when we do not need to. I recall my mom keeping her spices for years and years and years!

Well, I have heard Emeril say on occasion that we need to get rid of most spices that are past their shelf-life. So, BAM, in the wastebasket they go!

Yea I know some spices don't lat very long. I will need to check mine though. I know a few are no good so I'll write up the grocery list since I still use them.

Also bugs get into spices. So it's good idea to keep spices new and tight lid. Flavor taste better with new spices.

Good thing I just put all new spices/herbs in small glass jars in a few weeks ago after I bought a cute " antique " cabinet. I poured all spices/herbs in glass jars instead of keepin' them in plastic jars. I got the glass jars for spices/herbs from the yard sale at my neighbor's.

By the way, thanks for bringin' this up. I bookmarked it in my favorite. :)

Yes it's good idea to put herbs/spices in glass jars. It will last for a long time. For plastic jars, it usually good for up to one year.

Hi, PeachyLady; I believe bugs in spices or other dried foods like oatmeal, etc come from WITHIN.

Very true, it will last for a very long time than plastic jars.

Interesting thread here...

I'll back for my further post...

yes some spices and seasonings are only good for 6 months at most if its in plastic.. but glass.. can go longer than that.. i think they just want people to buy fresher spices n seasonings to make money.. jeez.. stupid..

I feel your pain. When I cook chili in a dutch-oven from scratch up it costs me a little around 50-60 bucks for all the stuff. But it's so good everyone eats it gone in 3 days or less! It's a pretty big pot too. At times I think it would be easier to grow my own spices. Dill isn't even that rare or hard to grow :( plenty of wild dill around the river here and one of my relatives used it for making perserves, tasted just the same if not better.
