Do you have a emergency kit?

I drove my Mustang through the northern part of Texas via I-40W and it was covered with ice. I watched 4WD vehicles slide off the road, while my car kept going (Until an accident ahead stopped traffic) but my little RWD Mustang performed nicely because I know how to drive.

Anyway, I don't have a road kit exactly, but I do have a LED tripod light and fix-a-flat as well as a spare tire and air pump for the tires. Right now I have my toolbox in the back of my car.

Also, never underestimate the power of duct tape.

Not just know how to drive. Most sports as RWD already have traction control which it's helpful to control on snow. Sad, Mostly SUV around 00's or older don't not have traction control. Yes, traction control is better than 4WD. Trust me.

How did the ice get there to begin with?

Just saying that if the snow had stayed snow ... it wouldn't have been a problem. It melted on the asphalt and refreezed and became clear, slick, rock hard ice. You can drive on snow.

I do not have one but people that travel with pets a lot should food and meds if their pets is taking any and water for them too. You should have things for their babies too. I think hand warmers would be a good idea to have if you run out of gas in a middle of a snow storm . You put them on top the baby blanket to keep him/her warm.

We had a couple of volunteers checking on pets for those stuck in traffic.

The glass breaking escape tool Reba mentioned should be kind of secured like in a shoulder holster.

The usual small stuff- fire(multiple), knife, electric tape, cheap tool box with tools including wire cutters, flashlight(multiple), some kind of flasher/flare/triangles/cone. Orange traffic vest size extra large. Military wool blanket. Hunk of rope or parachute cord. Tie wire. Drugstore glasses.

Yellow sunglasses( vital for snow driving in the day and will surprise you at how well they sooth the sunlight through the trees strobe light effect.
I use them for too bright sun too.

Energy bars and arrowhead bottled water

Always, always a roll of paper towels.

The smartest cell phone you can afford.

Then fill up a sports bag with handwarmer packets, gloves, long scarf, extra socks, more paper towels, hats, boots, down vest with collar, etc. etc.

30 foot tow strap, with shackle. Jumper cables. Oil. Antifreeze. Automatic transmission fluid, Brake fluid. Spare headlight/taillight.

And the most important thing, God, good sense, and chewing gum.

I do actually... but it's not in my car oops. I answered a trivia question on FB for the local NEMA, got it right and won the emergency kit/pack. should be keeping it in the car, huh.

I heard the news people are blaming the weather reporters for not giving any warning about the snow coming , and the weather reporters said they did give enough warning , some blame the city for not doing their jobs.
What do you feel about this ?

Actually TCS makes driving in snow and ice worse since it applies brakes when it senses the car is losing traction and any breaking on snow or ice makes you slide. I turned TCS off and just drove.

Pffttt... I have a crown vic which has RWD and summer tires and I was able to get around fine. I just have to go slow and use common sense. I don't see the point in getting all season tires when here in ATL we usually just get 1 day of snow out of the entire year.

Mine is bright orange, and it comes with a holder. The holder is attached to my overhead console, so I don't have to search for it.

The weather reports were there--I don't see how they missed them.

This is the same kind of fiasco that we in South Carolina faced several years ago with Hurricane Floyd. After the devastation of Hurricane Hugo, when Floyd threatened our coast many, many more people evacuated (including us). It was supposed to be worse than Hugo. Anyway, the Governor at that time, Jim Hodges, totally bungled it. He didn't open the reverse lanes in time. Thousands of people were stranded. It was a total nightmare.

Needless to say, he was a one-term governor.

I remember adam decided to get one after this mythbusters episode:

Hope he took his hearing aid out before the car got dunked!

I heard on the news tonight the mayor was sleeping when the warning came out for this storm . He said the buck stopped with him , I am not sure that is going to made people feel better . This happen in Boston a couple of winters ago , people got stuck on the road for hours. So when we got another big snow storm the whole city of Boston and my city had a ban on driving . People where not allow on the road so they could be cleaned off.

I think the salt trucks should have been on the road before everyone was released from school/work. It happened at the same time, thousands of commuters got on the road at the same time and caused gridlock.

In my Jeep I keep tissues which can also be used as toilet paper. I also have a knife, fire extinguisher, escape tool (for breaking glass), space blanket, first aid kit, umbrella, spare reading glasses, water bottle, antibacterial wipes, fold-up hooded windbreaker, flashlight, sunglasses, amongst other stuff.

Bible, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, koozie, tote bag, guard rat.

When I was working as terp I carried more stuff but now I don't do much driving.

A prepper in the making. :)

Depending on the occasion, I may carry more items, but, I have at least a first aid kit, knife, flashlight, tire pressure gauge, emergency numbers in my cell phone and rain ponchos in my Jeep and in my Honda trike.

I forgot, my collection of DVDs in the back of the Jeep for the overhead player if I get stranded and bored.

I guess your TCS sucks. I tried CX-5's Electronic stability control (ESC) and it's much better control on ice road. My wife drove old car without TCS all her life for over 15 years till she got brand new CX-5 and she said it got MUCH MUCH better with ESC for ice and snow.
