deaf pride?

I strongly disagree, since I do consider deafness as a disability. For example, people who cant walk, they use prosthetic legs or wheelchair to help them to have the ability to walk, just like deaf people with cochlear implant.
 
Not at all...I think a lot of the people who are against CIs (in any case) are probaly the same people who claim that people like Levoion and I (HOH in other words) don't have a place in Deaf culture. I've noticed the opposition to CIs disippatating somewhat. There are still people who are anti-CI and won't have ANYTHING to do with CIs but people are realizing that essentially they've had as much impact on deaf people becoming 100% a part of the hearing world as hearing aids have.
 
No..I don't think the CI poses a danger to deaf pride at all. It's just a device that helps deaf people in being able to socialise with both worlds (hearing) and deaf.
I have a CI, but I'm always going to be DEAF all my life, no matter what. :D
 
A lot of people who truly believe in "Deaf Pride" are threatened by CIs. I see it a lot here at NTID. They even have students who follow "Deaf Pride" proudly and criticize the Cochlear Implant Club!

Yes, but why? I know that a lot of people who are against them associate them with oralism and oral training, but stats(from the CI companies) indicate that CI users are evenly divided between TCers and oralists. I actually know of parents of signers who have gotten them for their kids! Besides way back when hearing aids were first introduced, the Deaf leaders (and most of the community) were against hearing aids. The CI is just simply a superpowered hearing aid. Just as with hearing aids, some people get a lot of benifit from CI and some people only get the benifit of enviromental sounds from their CI. Most people fall in between those two extremes.

That is really lame. A club is a place for people to get together, especially when they have something in common so they can share their feelings and experiences with each other that may understand.

Just like there are clubs for breast cancer survivors, cancer survivors, alcoholics, drug users, and many more. It's basically a form of support system.

People need to wake up and smell the coffee, and realize that not everybody want to be the same.

Yeah, it's pathetic in some ways. Sometimes, I feel sorry for these students who fear others. :(

Yes, some students take "Deaf Power" too far. A lot of people who join the Cochlear Implant Club... join in secret. I recently found out that a couple of my friends were members of that club and they never told me until I asked. They said that they have friends who strongly believe in "Deaf Pride", but he wanted to understand more about CIs so he joined the club only for that reason.
 
ARUGHHH....some of those "deafer then thou" people really make me mad!
If being Deaf was all about having NO hearing, then there wouldn't be any Hoh folks identifying as Deaf. Being Deaf is about being primarily visual and using ASL...Wasn't it Ben Bahan who said that we should see ourselves as "Seeing" people? I mean there are some hearing people who are culturally Deaf b/c they use Sign due to things like tracheostomies and apraxia. (remember that person who posted here a few months ago about her apraxic daughter going to St. Rita's School for the Deaf?)
Then again before anyone jumps on the "Deaf culture sucks b/c of the extremists" bandwagon......most if not all cultures have their extremists. Yet we don't have people going on and on that White culture sucks b/c of White Supermatists or that Christianity sucks b/c of things like Christian Idenity or whatever. Hey...I have a friend who is black but doesn't identify as black b/c he gets shit on by blacks who say he acts too "white"
 
nope, not at all! i could see that c.i. is very profitable for improvement in communication for deaf people at work or anywhere.

as for me, i'd use it as a tool to communicate with my co-workers so that way our work relationship can work together. it has been difficult when they didnt have a spare second to speak with me. it doesnt matter if ive complained. besides, i have a feeling i could make improvement in works using communications.

its only "danger" to those who believe c.i. will turn them into hearing and fuck the deaf culture. tsk tsk.

The Deaf Pride people are apparently dense in one sense as they forgot that people with CI are also DEAF regardless of how CI helps them hear. Duh, are they going to target those who wears Hearing Aids next?

Yes, a lot of those people have been taught that hoh people have more in common with hearing people then with deaf people :crazy:That is complete and utter crap. I can hear pretty well (both with aids and without) but most of the hoh kids I know don't feel 100% comfortable in the hearing world....Look at that post by deaf88 for example! Anyone who is HOH who thinks that hearing aids or CIs make them more "culturally hearing" is definitly smoking something!
Vampy and Hermit, I am also a disabilty rights activist and yes...there IS a VERY STRONG disabilty culture out there. I would say that it's based mainly on physical disabilties. Actually, there is even an ANTI CURE movement in some dis rights circiles...matter of fact some dis culture therorists hypothesize that disabilty is nautral and just a part of human difference (and it shouldn't be eridicated) I'll see if I can post some links after the holidays (my mom's on the warpath seeing as we're hosting a party for my brother getting married on Saturday)
 
No, I do not believe that CIs are a threat to the Deaf culture/community.
I work with children and their parents, and one parent told me that she simply wanted the best for her son. However, if the son doesn't want to wear CI a particular day, she respects that and lets him not wear it that day. She said that if her son should ever want to stop wearing CI one day, she will respect that too. She just wants her son to grow up with all the options available to him. She also complained about the people who tried to force her into making decision for CI right away, and wishes that people would not be so pressing on parents to implant their children right away.

I have several friends who have CIs, and it doesn't bother me. Everyone is different, and I will be who I am. I also acknowledge who they are, and accept them. What I really dislike is the attitude that some deaf people may have, not accepting CI deafs or vice versa, CI deafs thinking they're better than Deaf people. Nobody is better than anyone, period.

Yes, there are some awesome awesome parents out there who are openminded and OK with their kids being exposed to deaf culture and ASL. I know of parents of hard of hearing kids(matter of fact I even know of TWO unilateral loss kids who are attending schools for the deaf) who are sending their kids to schools for the deaf and exposing their kids to ASL. I know Deaf people associate things like CIs and hearing aids with oral training, but the stats say that CI users are evenly divided between orals and TCers! There are even parents who send their kids to oral schools or oral programs who do so b/c they think that the oral component of TC programs are neglected, not b/c they think Sign is evil or b/c they want "healthy normal" psedeohearing" kids.
I'm OK with implants for those kids who REALLY need them (like the kids with auditory nereopathy or kids who don't get any benifit from aids) but I do think that the pressure to implant right away is a little extreme. I have a lot more to say on this subject but I'm falling asleep now. :zzz:
 
People in the deaf community in Australia are generally more accepting about people who have CI -- only a small handful aren't. Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped me from getting one when I did in 2000.

There are a couple of kids who have a CI -- one is very involved in the deaf community and isn't afraid to speak up about it whereas the other one is pathetically afraid and is nearly an adult. Refuses to socialise with deaf kids nor other adults at this stage as the parents refuse to sign around that person and don't have any teletext nor TTY at the house for the deaf.
As a result of that - person's self esteem and social life is nearly zilch. Has severe emotional problems and can't read all that much. Requires assistance in correcting the language when writing. Can sign, but only in signed english. :roll:
 
dont get me wrong, I am deaf myself. I just prefer hearing world. Deaf culture is full of backstabbing, dramas, and lot of other bullshits. I should get a shirt saying FUCK DEAF CULTURE.
