Do not stay at Comfort Inn!

This past weekend, I was scheduled to give a presentation at a deaf club in Boise, Idaho and arranged to stay at a Comfort Inn there.

During my stay at Comfort Inn, I woke up to get breakfast. After I came back, I decided to take a short nap. I looked around for a Do Not Disturb sign to put on the doorknob but there wasn't any. So I locked both of two locks on the door. An hour later, I woke up to lights everywhere in the room. Puzzled, I got up and examined the room, wondering who turned on the lights. I noticed the door looked weird so I went closer, and saw that both locks were ripped off and the door frame was gone. Some wood shards were on the carpet.

I ran to the front desk to ask what was going on. The manager was rude. She said You did not answer the knocks so the maid got upset and asked me to enter the room. I said But I am deaf and cannot hear the knocks so you have no right to enter the room like that!! She refused to apologize. I told her that she could have at least wake me up and let me know what was going on or leave a note for me to see her. She still refused and told me that I had a few minutes to pack up and leave. Furious, I went back to the room and packed up so fast that I was out of there in 2 minutes.

I felt sooooo violated by that. If I ever get submitted a bill for that damage, I will refuse to pay. It looks like about 600 dollars worth of damage to the door.

Needless to say, I will never sleep at a Comfort Inn again!

OH MY GOD!! Oh boy! did they tell you that you will receive the bill of damages?? i know you said if you will get it and will refuse it. I am at a loss and do not know what to say. THEY definitely are rude and have no rights to come in while you were sleeping. HOW embarrassed. I hope someone esel offers you better advice than I do.

If i were in your shoes, i would have called police because of the damage door. I also guess call the ADA about it as well because they did not offer you the light flasher for doors. i am told that the hotels are required to have the accomdentation for deaf peoples neccesaary.

I am so speechless now. I ll re read your post and think it over what to say.

Meg..that is a terrible horrendous thing that happened to you! Next time, you check into a motel/hotel, just tell the check in/out desk that you are DEAF and have them alert the maids that you are deaf so they will know that fact.
I always did that and it works so i never had any problems with them. It would be a safety thing too, in case of fire so they can alert you in some way.

you should ask the clerk to get an sign of "Do Not Disturb". You, customer have a right to get one before taking a nap.

Still... these crazy clerks are doing awful job.

Let's not get carried away. Why don't you be more specific about that particular Comfort Inn? Where's that hotel? What's the address of that hotel? Not all Comfort Inns are like that. In fact, the best customer service I ever got was at Comfort Inn.

Youre right, Van but I've stayed at 10 different Comfort Inn motels in 5 different states in the past 3 months for my work but I received from just OK to not so good to horrible services. This one was the worst one of all.

Three of them refused to fix the TV so I could see it with CC. They had it fixed so that it would not appear. Eight out of 10 did not have TTY to provide. Only one had flasher for the door.

Defee, I did tell the manager I was deaf when I was registering at that Boise Comfort Inn but he did not inform the next day manager. She could have at least apologized or wake me up while I was asleep rather than barging in, knocking the door down and cleaning up while I was sleeping through the WHOLE orderal.

That was the final straw - I will never book another visit at Comfort Inn for rest of my outreach business trips.

Meg,

Do yourself and others a favor. Report all that has happened to the Comfort Inn Corporate office. Detail everything that has happened, and try to recall the dates, times, and names of persons involved. This is called a letter of complaint. The Headquarters would appreciate hearing it, and would try to look into the incident and perhaps reimburse you for all that trouble.

I always write a letter of complaint. I never nag or threaten them. And I usually get a nice response from them (and sometimes also from the place where the incident occurred) -- and usually I get "freebies" from that.

I suggest you do it ASAP. Like Vampy, said, not all Comfort Inns are like that. I realize that you had moderate to severe disappointments from the many Comfort Inns you've stayed at. Usually it's the management, and it also sounds like a case of ADA-violation and privacy violation (I'm so shocked to hear they actually broke the locks, while the room is being occupied at that period of time -- with or without a "Do Not Disturb" sigh).

Good luck.

Yeah, how could the room have been locked from the inside in the first place when it can only be done inside?

yeah, and another thing is weird about this...its an invasion of privacy too! I cant believe they would clean around her while she was asleep!
Meg, im surprised you didnt feel the banging and all on the door, and also if the maids were in there cleaning around, yu didnt feel anything like the vacuum sweeper on the floor, ya know it vibrates on the floor?...
Why would they tear the door down like that if they knew that you are deaf?
strange......

true. I was one of rude staff in north of Dallas at Albertson.

Wow, that maid must have been on crack to get into your room that badly by breaking it down.....I don't get it, why would a maid break a door down just to get into the room to clean or do whatever it is.....and the hotel mananger isn't mad that his/her own maid broke the door? ....boy, It cost more to get a door replace , a new lock and etc than trying to get a deaf person to answer a door....That maid should have came back another time....If I were one of the maid I would figure it out why someone wouldn't answer the door...ohhhhhh duh that person is deaf! go figures

I don't blame you at all Meg, I think this hotel need more brains than a "Do Not Disturb" sign!

Title III

It appears to be a classic Title III violation.

The question I have is why didnt the hotel management install the "ADA Kit" for deaf people when you were checking in? I know all major hotel chains carry these kits.

I even sold and rented those kits to hotels in the past.

That's really WRONG....the maid should get fired for breaking in. You can sue them with ADA because u have not done anything wrong. I am sorry that happened, just don't pay the fine and take it to the court. I think it's stupid to have lack of do not disturb signs....sucks to hear that kind of story....I hope u get that settled with comfort inn company.

Thanks all for the posts.

I've calmed down somewhat now. I spoke with a friend who is a cop and he said I should have contacted Boise cops to file a report for a major violation of my rights while staying there. The cop said that the reason why the manager was so eager to tell me to leave within a few minutes because she was afraid I would realize what she did and could have called the cops or demanded to take pictures of the door. The cop said that it does not matter whether I had a Do Not Disturb sign on the doorknob or not..they still have no right to enter a room like that unless they suspect illegal activities and call the cops to handle that.

I was just too stunned to make any sense out of it until today. It wasnt just the maid but the manager too who were doing that. I just felt so vulnerable knowing that I slept through the whole time they were banging/ripping the door down, vaccuming the carpet and turning on the lights.

This is not just a ADA violation but personal citizen violation too.

Oh, my god. I feel for you. I was ripped off by a motel on Supedalva Rd in Vans Nuys one time four years ago. I asked the manager to cancel my reservation. He said he will, but he did not. I saw the charge on my cc bill and reported my complaint to cc company (included my TTY evidence and phone bill). The cc company removed the charge for me and called the motel to stop charging me. The manager was rude and asshole who took advantage of me. :dizzy:

I was saying, how could someone lock the door when they leave when they lock it from the inside, which can only be locked from the inside. That's what I'm trying to say. ;)

whoa i am sowwy to hear abt it!! i cant believe that.. should sue for that... dang!

Oh my god ! Meg !! I am glad, you are okay. Unbelievable, they have no right to volience your privacy while you took a nap. I would be freak out if the strange person in that room if I woke up from the nap.

I may screamed "Get Out of this room !!". Read the sign at the doorknob ! I would call police for harrassment of privacy.

That is really disgusted ! I can't image how people are rude to the cusomters if they are really tired from long trip. The hotel should respect the customers to relax and enjoy their rooms.

I am very senstive vibator and air blow on my skin while I sleep. Even the light on...
