Hello everyone. I am taking a course through the University of Dayton, in Ohio, where I am studying to become an intervention specialist. One of our class texts is William Heward’s "Exceptional Children", which includes a chapter on “Deafness and Hearing Loss.” I am trying to understand some basic ideas about the Deaf culture that will help me to become a better teacher for my future students. If anyone has any suggestions or insight that may help me to have a better understanding for this culture or any reading materials that you recommend, I would really appreciate it. Thank you and I look forward to talking with everyone.

"Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters" by Anna Mindess. NOT just for interpreters.

"A Journey Into the DEAF-WORLD" by Lane, Hoffmeister, and Bahan. Standard Deaf culture text.

Sorry about misspelling yourname Interpretrator, I just caught my error. Also, I will check out both of those books, not just that book. Any other suggestions that anyone has will be appreciated. Thanks.

I read "Journey into the Deaf-World" It was good. I am looking for "reading between the signs" I am hoping my ASL prof has a copy that I could borrow

:ugh3: There's more to learn and understand in more than one chapter. One book that was assigned to me in my second asl class is this book: The Week the World Heard Gallaudet Even though I am hoh, this still applies to me and I am in agreement with the students. I have a hearing dog (pic @ L with Snickers and me) and you won't believe the stuff we go through!
