Dinner Date

My family has cooked lobsters at home for generations, and I've never heard one "scream." They don't even have vocal chords.

 My step mother said the loud noise came from the lobster screaming, I don't believe my mother would lie to me like that or take advantage of my deafness either...

I've heard some people told me that they could hear the lobsters' screamin' when boilin' in hot water. I am glad I am deaf - don't wanna to experience their screamin' otherwise I won't eat lobsters.

Really Maria? I'm glad you said this cause I'm starting to feel as if she had lied to me....All I could hear was a loud noise but I didn't know where the sounds were coming from until she told me...

Thanks I feel a bit better now...

We rarely gout out my boyfriend always cooks for me I'm not sure why though, I think I might be worlds fussiest eater but he's never made me anything I didn't like. I feel kind of useless whenever I go over & he's cooking; when I'm in the kitchen everything I touch burns.

The "scream" some people hear is more of a high-pitched whine. It comes from the shell. When it is heated it releases gas which causes a sound. Lobsters have no vocal chords or other ways to produce a scream. They can make soft clicking and grinding noises with their mouths but a scream is more than they are capable of.

Having raised 7 children, you can guess where we eat
out when we can! The best way to do a fast food burger
place is to bring tomatoes and lettuce, (I use sprouts) and
sliced onions all with you. Buy the cheapie dollar burgers
and "doctor" them up with your own stuff!

Yes, you & Maria are not alone, me and my hubby, too.

I grow up at aboarding school which only 10 minutes away walk to seaside. I often withnessed how and what they did with alive lobsters and crabs. I has my feeling. My supersivor/teachers said that they heard noise near fish resturants when we walked pass the fish resturant.

When my hubby & I visited my school to reunion with my old school mates in 1992. We went to seafood resturant afterward. My hubby was like  when he saw alive crabs and lobsters walk around with water with several shells, weeds at large glass at their resturant - it's really pretty view. My hubby were shock when he saw the waiter picked 2 crabs up and show customers which one they want to pick... Poor crabs don't know why the waiter hold their legs and then put one of crabs back and other one to boil hot water... crab tried to fight to be survive but he can't made it... I can see crab's impression face...:tears: My hubby asked why? I told him that boil alive crabs and lobsters fresh taste. It does the same with alive trouts in several resturant here in Germany as well... oh well...

Those resturant is my hubby & my favorite - those is best place for romantic...

My hubby celebrated his 50th birthday with guests there at New Year Eve 2004 and also Danny's confirmation last April as well. We took my British family to have a relax drink there one day before Danny's Confirmation. They fall in love with those atomphere of Resturant.

My hubby & I went there when we are alone sometimes.

Danny made a suggestion to us last sunday during breakfast conversation about going there to celebrate Xmas Dinner to save cooking time on Xmas Day. We cannot promise either we can go there or not... ? Wait and See.

Oh dear ... haha ... speaking of lobsters ... Yeah ... my ex used to cook 100 lobsters in our kitchen yearly!!! Those lobsters were from Maine. An old friend of ours flew over to Florida with 100 alive lobsters in freeze boxes. We invited about 25 people as we used to have "lobster party" every winters. While cooking them, they sure did sound screaming and I hate it!

Yep, they can feel pain and suffering once they're dropped in a hot boiling water and someone once told me that lobsters do not feel pain, I don't know how anyone could say that the lobster does not feel pain, and some says lobsters are killed instantly if you put their head in first, but when my step mom put hers in, it didn't die instantly...

Also there's been debates over the years about whether or not animals can feel pain but I believe that ALL animals do feel the pain, and I don't believe animals deserve to suffer or killing live animals in a boiling water....:tears:

Yes, I talked to a friend of mine last night about whether or not if a lobster does scream, she said that the "scream" that my step mom heard was from the steam escaping from their shell not the lobster actually screaming but it does sound like screaming...

My grandmother used to hold the lobsters on their backs and stroke their "bellies" until they relaxed. Then she plunged them into the boiling water.

I was at the restaurant working when my step mom dropped the live lobsters in the hot boiling water, and I even heard the high pitch sounds and I asked her what was that noises she said it was the lobsters.

I guess it depends on how you put those lobsters in boil water, some people kills the lobsters first before putting them in boiling water.

If they have no vocal chords, how can they scream?

The sound is the steam hissing, not screaming.

Why are you telling me this?

I'm just saying what I've heard and what my step-mother had told me nothing more nothing less. I'm just stating the facts. :)

What would an air whistling sound like? screaming? If so this is what I heard, I heard a sound of a high pitch noise.
It could. Think about a tea kettle whistling; it's the same principle.

Oh, oh, I'm showing my age. Maybe people don't use steam tea kettles anymore?
