Did you wear body aid while young?

I remember wearing body aids till I was 9 years old.
 
oh, yea I wore body aid when I was a kid at elementary school. it looks funny on me. it felt like...uhmmm like this pic but no body aid. :lol:

I wore bodyworn hearing aids from the age of 2-3ish til I was 5 (1982-1986), then BTE hearing aids from age 6 til about 10 or 11 (1986-1990 or 1991), and after that, nothing for a long time until 2006 I got my Nucleus Freedom implant. It is 2010 and I still wear my Freedom.

Looking back, I think some of the deaf may have stopped wearing body aids a little too young, particularly during the 1970's when the BTE's weren't as powerful as the body aids were back then particularly for the profoundly deaf...
 
i never had a body aid, but my first FM system was body worn, with wires up to the DAI input on my HAs.

When I was young-they didn't exist! Fortunately not required then. My first Hearing aid was in my glasses back in the middle 60s. Then went to BTE in the early 70s.Never had an FM system either. The only thing I can remember about Hearing Aids then -was a large device fit into your ear with a tube going into a large device -guess microphone- and powered by a large battery which was carried in a shirt pocket. This would be over 50-60 years ago.

In retrospective, I think it may have affected some of the profoundly deaf's communication skills when they stopped wearing the body aids too soon. Like at the age of 10 or below, as opposed to later years when they were older teenagers or young adults, etc.

Kids today still wear bodyworn and I'm sure they hate it just as much as we did in the past. Most younger CI children wear bodyworn. Some just wear their BTE CI like a bodyworn too. I got stared at all the time in school. It doesn't matter what the sound quality is like. Yeah, that is exactly what I had when I had to wear the big hearing aid (the body aid) when I was almost 9 years old. That was in 1954. I only had one ear mold with the cord around my neck. I really hate being worn in front of my chest. When I became a teenager, I feel funny having the body aid like I having three breasts. :rofl: I felt like a nerd. Then almost close to my 20 years old, I was very relieved to have the behind the ear hearing aid (only the left ear). :D

Yes, I used to have two body aids on my chest and would occassionally "lift them up" and say "I'm a girl...!" just to make my friends laugh! :lol:

:rofl: Oh, my that is really terrible when here we are being a teenagers becomes a disaster. I will never forget that, ever. Oh, that was funny back then. :lol:
 
One thing though, I was able to wear them inside my shirt so that helped a little. But it seems that they made the deaf wear them on the outside in schools for the deaf thus making them more visible?
 
ooohh that brings back memories!!!

I remember mother being quite handy with sewing machine and made custom pocket harnesses for my body aids to fit in. I had two at the time from 6mths old right up to when I finally got my first BTE's in the late 70's. I used to hate the way body aids would jerk up and down if one tried to run or play chasing around the playground. They would always give me a cut chin cos one would bosh up my chin so hard that my chin would bleed! so my mother had a brainwave and altered the harness a bit, can't remember what though. It was a blessing and was so glad to see the back of them when I got my BTE's.

WTF????? Hearing aids in the glasses????? Wow. How come I never knew about those? LOL. Now, this you will not believe.... Look at this one.

To answer the thread's question, I wore body aids from 6 months old to 1st grade. Granted, the BTE's are not as strong as the body aids, but I loved the BTE's and hated the body aids. I wore body aids in school and BTE's at home. The body aids were good, but the volume that I needed to hear clearly was too distorted. You can only go so far with the HA technology without distortion. My deafness has always been so profound.

Recently, I lost the rest of my residual hearing. I can't use hearing aids anymore. Apparently, my deafness is permanent. I'm a good candidate to get a CI. I just need to figure out how to pay for what the insurance won't pay for (80% coverage).

I never thought I would become sort of "bionic" in my life. LOL! I remember my mom trying to explain Jamie's deafness in one of her ears on "Bionic Woman" when I was like 5 or 6.

My mom used to make those harnesses for me. I'm not sure why exactly, though. I guess she thought it would be "prettier" than those industrial versions.
