Please do not bash or flame.. It's important issues for me.. might be flare or frustrations but please dont misunderstand.. thanks

This thread is for who is diabetic or your partner or whoever that you are in the support system/taking care..

My man, Marcus as I suspect for long time since we met even though other people or friends knew he has it.. He waited too long.. now he learned lesson that hes taking hard way to go through that he is Type 1 and 2.. taking insulins and shot and pills.. but at first it was Dr's fault for not detect that he is diabetic for some while time.

What happen.. he went to dr last monday (11th), said to his Dr that hes not feeling good.. constantly peeing and mouth dry- thrist and rapid lost weights.. Dr told him he is diabetic.. gave him pill to take and sent home..

Few of us were surprised that Dr didnt tell him what his Blood sugar level was.. Next morning, He and I went to work... (he wasnt looking good).. His Boss who is also diabetic, said uh? Dr sent him home with pill and didnt tell us right away how to "educate" the food intake.. thought he suppose to go Hospital to get treatment.. so, Marcus came to us and said, he didnt feel not right and not real good.. so the boss said take meter test (blood sugar) and it said 575.. we shocked and I took him to ER.. the ER tested his blood sugar again and it went over 600 beyond at this point.. they rambling around and put him IV drip and try to figure what to do, had his heart checked, blood work.. then start insulin and shots.. Drs made him stay in hospital for few days so marcus and myself get some educating how to take care.. and food intake.. Carbs! that he has to follow since hes still on strict diet.. since he is in hospital, he have no problem eatting diet.. but he came home last thrusday.. it was hard for him to facing temptation with all the food..

I tried my best and hard work to get things right.. remind him to take meds.. like i printed out what dr says that he suppose to take.. and post on wall and reminders too on mirror.. like did you take pill. but sound like I am too much for him..

It been changed so much.. and I feel that I am stressing him out.. I will take Diabetic support group.. and some classes for changing our food for this family too so he wont feel left out or temptation.. I have been study and reading the food stratches/carbohydrates...

Why is it hard.. carbohydrates are really tricky because it has sugar in it even sugar already listed in there.. and break down after you made something like.. chili.. tomatoes have carbs.. write down to add how much did you put in chili.. for sample. 120 carbs.. per can.. I put 4 cans in.. means 480 carbs.. plus other stuff you put in.. add to that.. (meats dont have carbs).. then total carbs.. break down to Marcus' strict carbs diet.. like 75 grams for supper.. so how much chili he should get but make it less so he can choose more choices (like crackers, fruits &milk) etc..

its so confusing.. hehe.. my question.. how can you deal or like to have someone support you if you are diabetic.. he sometimes want to left alone or hungry for our support.. refused go on strict diet.. rely on insulin because it helps to balance his sugar blood level.. I told him.. its not good to have the level go down and up and up then down .. need to stay stable.. Of course excerise too.. (walk for 15 min two times a day).. or anything for 30 min.. it helps to fuel out the sugar blood system in your body..

Greatly appreciated if help or your input.. :)

By the way, I forgot to add..

Any tips or info for the carbohydrate .. (15 grams).. etc..
chart..

I tried to look for.. websites.. so i can print down since we dont have copy machine.. I just like to copy the chart and cut it out.. post it on cupboard cabient to let Marcus see it , easy choice for him to choose..

thanks

I am sorry to hear he has diabetic. He is lucky to be alive, one of my classmate died from it after wait too long before he found out he had it. I have diabetic but not on pills nor insulins. Not easy for me to follow proper diet esp around the holidays and parties etc... We all go thru up and down because of limition. This morning I am going to have oatmeal, not quick but slow cook and use severia for sweet which I got it from heatlh store. I am surprise they did not send your man to nutrionist to discuss diets on what he can eat or can not eat. No fruits for me, sure do miss them much. I do not eat white food alike crackers or white bread but eat whole wheat crackers and breads. I bought whole wheat noodles for me to eat with homemade spagehtti. I do not see tomato has effect on my sugar but potato is my enemy, eat little red potato is okay because my husband need alot of starch foods to keep his weight up and I have hard time with it bec I love potato. Also I take vitamins and lipoid acid which help me alot. I should do more exercise but not enough. If I can think of anything what foods it is good for him, I will let u know. It is hard yeah and he will go thru deep depression for long time till he accepts it.

Hello MsGiglz, I've been a diabetic (Type 2) for six years now and I'm currently trying to keep my diabetes under control.

If you want to know about carbs, here's a good web site for you. Is this what you're looking for?

It is best to eat complex carbs and not simple carbs as it helps a great deal with blood sugars.

I know you're trying to help your man and it's important to have support. It helps to have support if you're diabetic and I'm glad you'll provide support for him.

However, you can't force him to go on a strict diet. :( It's very hard to stick to a diet - especially a strict diet but you do need to remind him that he can't afford to lose his sight or have a heart attack. These are a few of the several complications of uncontrolled diabetes.

When you do blood sugar testing, you will notice certain foods will cause his blood sugar to go up more.

For example, cornbread tends to make my blood sugar go up a great deal but popcorn won't make my blood sugar go crazy. I've decided to have cornbread once a month or so due to problems with blood sugars. I'm thinking of buying barley cereal as I've heard it's good for blood sugar.

Good carbs that he can eat are beans, whole wheat and whole grain foods. If you buy bread, make sure it's WHOLE wheat as some bread makers will dye white bread brown and then sell it as "wheat" bread.

I mean stevia not severia, not hurt sugar blood if I want to add some sweet to tea or bland cereal alike oatmeal.

Jazzy & Deafspketic

Thanks so much for your input...

I am sorry that both of you go through, I know its VERY difficult.. even Myself learn more and I start to take care myself before I might have it.. I love sweets sometimes i went over the limit..

Jazzy.. I am sorry I didnt mention about nurtionist (dietican).. yes, we are going to see one soon.. we saw few at the hospital while he was staying.. I keep on asking questions and still i have more questions lol.. as soon we get the classes.. I am sure I will understand more.. nevermore ending, alot of thigns are new everyday..

Deafskeptic-- myself LOVES eat oragnic foods (grain bread, whole wheat & etc and dried fruits).. but they arent good for diabetic tho cuz it has high carbs in it.. Yes, you are right about whole wheat bread.. I have to read the indrigent what they put in whole wheat.. they do dye brown or add little bit wheat bread.. and sell it "WHEAT BREAD" (scoffs).. we have to read carefully on the indrigents.. :/ no fun..

I have been typing in the charts.. what he can make choices to choose like.. lists of stratches, fruit, beverage, dairy... with carb numbers.. I posted on the cupboard cabients for now.. it was only 40 less items.. If he feels "offs" I can make the choices from the list.. and make it.. put on tray.. if he dont want it.. just put aside.. his temptation cant resist to eat that he needs.. I hope support but tolerance alot too.. cranky.. crabby.. :)

i dont have diabetic!

my dad and my grandma have one for longtimes dues its hard for me to tell you but my dad been using diabetic for their heart and my grandmother also because my grandmother have strokes.

my late step-father have also of diabetic for longtimes so till he died in summer June 2000 but he got dialysis dues of failures of kidney and livers but my mom still miss him lots for 6 years but almost 7 years.

Actually I think I would like to offer an explanation of what diabetes is, since I have been studying it in school. It is when the pancreas beta-cells are attacked, and unable to produce insulin in its normal capacity (reduced or none at all). The insulin is what helps the muscle bring the sugar into the muscle cells to be used up, as muscle needs sugar to function. When there is no insulin in the body system, these sugar don't get into the muscle cells and starts to build up. The muscle cells get "starved" and start to malfunction.

There have been studies which have shown that exercise really helps with diabetes. There was a comparison between three individuals after exercise:

1) a normal nondiabetic person, 90 mg/dl after exercising
2) a non-exercising diabetic person, about 250 mg/dl
3) an exercising diabetic person, about 190 mg/dl after exercising

Exercise increases sensitivity of cells to insulin and should be encouraged in diabetic individuals.

My grandpa had DB and My bio-mother have db, so pretty much it will pass no me but never know..

Im working on the diet right now to prevent from the DB..

 MsGiglz -- i know it is challenging!!! I too have been studying up on diabetes type 1 and 2 -- Im now watching Froggie's diet and we have discussed about this and we are agreeable abt changing our diets in 2007 after learning about Froggie's grandfather who also had diabetes along with the knowledge of Froggie's bio-mom and the risk for Froggie goes up considerably :(

u and ur man are in our prayers and as always have our support and encouragement!!! we :ily: all of u!!!

I understand how you feel about that, my grandma have db but it's not too bad.. And, my client have DB also, I have to feed her correct and diet food... She have to eat 6 meals a day, all of snack must to between of 15 to 20 grams of food, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner must be between 45 to 60 grams... It's hard to explain in here to how do with food if in person, I could explain so easier... Also, I'm not DB but have problem with Insulin because it counts too much of it, when I was in the meeting with my staffs, they taught us about DB and they wanted to taking test of blood each person who is smaller, medium, big, small bone, big bone, etc etc you know... So, I'm in the line and they took montior on me and it said 75 and I did eat four pizzas, vegetables with alot of ranch and three pepsi, they shocked and said that my blood level is too low and I was like what the? And told them that I felt fine... That's pretty odd... :|

My hubby's family side have diabetic when turn into old fart..
One day, I'll learn about this one..

Damn.. I am Diabetic myself as well. I cant believe that Marcus has double Diabetes..no fun. It sucks, really.

Carbos are "enemies." FYI, I never take Diabetes classes because I was mad that hospital failed to provide me an interpreter in PA. :ugh3: typical idiots. I fed up and left. I figured it out on my own. I decided to eat anything in SMALL portion and it worked for me. For example, I want to drink lemonade.. yes, sugar is there.. you can drink half sugar or low sugar lemonade in small glass...it won't hurt you.

You can substitute regular sugar with Splenda on anything.

Marcus, you need to have your eyes and feet checked once in a year..I think. FYI, I have not get my eyes and feet checked.. guilty as charged.:eek3:

Anyway, he will need to see a diabetic specialist (or endriocologist, sp?) every three months for A1C blood tests. Those tests will tell you the range of numbers you are in. If your blood level is 6.0 or lower, you are fine.

You have to test your blood at 4x a day (my adoptive mom test her blood once a week..mine.. I should have checked mine 2 or 4 x day, but umm..I am lazy..guilty as charged. :eek3: ). Anyway, use common sense when coming to eat something. That's what I use common sense and turn out I am fine so far.... *knock on the wood.*

If you are diabetic Type 2..... you can execrise and eat right..it will be reverse..(Micah, you can eat right and execrise, it will prevent you from becoming diabetic).

If you are diabetic type 1..well, shitfire.. (I am one of them.. :eek3: ).. All you can do is to watch what you eat.

Any question, you can call me on VP after 5 p.m.

wow i am pre- Diabetic.. i learned abt this.. i have a book for foods lists and carbs too.. i am sowwy that ur man had thru bad time.. hope everything he getting better in future

Gigly -

Marcus needs to fire his primary doctor and find a new one. He betrayed and didn't educate you guys at the first place otherwise Marcus would've gone into coma or died -without knowing that he was over 600 of the sugar level. It is very dangerous. Thanks to his Boss who saved his life! Becoming a Diabetic suddenly is not easy for him at first. Sorry about that. Hope everything goes well for you and Marcus.

Sorry to hear about Marcus, I hope everything gets better down the road. My husband is type 2 and so is his father, my mother, and grandfather. I'm hoping I don't get it but chances are I may get it. Yes, Carb is a killer. I have to learn to eat right food without all those high carbs. Here's the link if you want to know more about it. American Diabetes Association Home Page Take care! :)
