Deputies: 5 Teens Ingested Bath Salts

At least they had nice lilac scented breath. :giggle:

Kids can find all kinds of things to get a buzz from: aerosols, glue, paint, gasoline, etc. Most of these things are cheap and readily available in every home.

No doubt. If a kid wants an escape hatch from reality, they will find one. We need to stop talking so much to them about specific drugs and ways to get high, and talk to them more about why they want to get high.;)

None of these things can be purchased by a minor in the state of Florida. You also have to be 18 to buy a can of whipped cream. :)

Right. But what about the can of gas for the mower? The spray paint that is used to touch up things? The PAM spray for baking? Those items are often already there at the home. No need for the child to buy more. Not like they need gallons of gasoline to get a buzz. How do teen drivers fill the tank?

Agreed.

Maybe monitor your kid's internet usage? Or don't let them have access to a credit card to purchase things online?

Yeah, peer pressure is a bitch. Not referring to parents, necessarily, but the way we educate kids about drugs, generally, isn't working. We go about it the wrong way.

I agree to a certain point. Educating them is the key. Kids do think they are invincible and nothing can happen to them. I am hoping my children use the tools I teach them. I do monitor them and Yes, I am one of those parents that do snoop through my kids rooms and backpack. As long as they are under my care they are MY RESPONSIBILITY.

The kid obviously got it in the mail. Wondered why the parents did not check out the package. If my child got something from China that would raise a major red flag for me!

Parents not monitoring their kid's activity, or bothering to sit down and have a heart to heart about what is going on in his life.

Maybe he gets home from school earlier than his parents get home from work each day, so he gets to the mailbox first.

Could be.... Like Jillio said.. He had to have a credit card number to order online. That is one sneaky kid, or the parents are just do not pay attention.

I have Epsom salts that I use in my baths to relieve aches and pains, and I have never even thought of using it to get a high.

Hopefully my DD will grow up knowing and understanding the dangers of using common household objects to get 'high'. These are just as deadly as the 'real drugs'.

I can't imagine living in a home where I couldn't trust my child around a can of hair spray. That's bad.

My parents smoked marijuana and cigarettes when I was a kid growing up (they still do). I was never inclined to want to try either. Luckily I was the one in the family who was repulsed of the smell of such things. I don't even take medication for headaches much. I found drinking something like SmartWater, Gatorade, or even a can of Soda cures most. I used to suffer from constant cluster migraines tell I was put on Topamax and now that that is over it's all I really need.

My fiance has confessed to trying marijuana once and said he couldn't stand the taste of it and kept vomiting. I think both him and I have a bit of sensory impairment as smells have always made me sick to my stomach and with him he is sensitive to taste and texture of things.

I really hope one day people do not have to depend on drugs to cope with there life. If your unhappy you can get prescriptions to help you out or take charge and do something with your life.

I don't think Epson Salts are harmful. Aren't they like bigger salt pellets? (Plain Salt)

Epsom salt is ingested as a laxative. Old school remedy for constipation.

It's not the bath salt itself. It's the additive that causes the psychoactive effects called MDPV.

Epsom salts are safe and do not have that additive.

If that is true, then I forsee the FDA moving quickly to ban MDPV from bath salts and bath salts containing this substance cannot be sold to consumers and instead must be destroyed.

As for Epsom Salts, they have several different uses to relieve various symptoms. Since I have the opposite of constipation, I don't need to ingest them. I just use them for my hot baths when I come home all sore and achy from work, especially on the days I work both jobs and take my DD to softball games/practices. :dizzy: Thankfully I have been invited back to my friend's house this weekend and I may be tempted to use her Jacuzzi again, but I will see if she offers it to me first. I couldn't believe how relaxed I had become.

Back on topic - Epsom salts are not harmful unless you ingest a whole carton of them at one time. That's when you run into serious problems!

The FDA is moving to do just that. These "designer drugs" are popping up more quickly than the FDA can keep up with.

And I wonder how people come up with these stuff.

I saw an amateur chemist who came up with the compound for one of the brands of bath salts interviewed last week. Mostly extensive knowledge of chemistry, and a greed for money. The fact of the matter is, getting high is one of the most profitable businesses in this country. Everyone is seeking to change their reality. Drugs (and yes, even prescribed ones) are the easiest way to do it. There will always be a market for mood altering substances.

I remember the 'K2' rage here a couple of years ago. Arkansas banned it and about 2-3 months later the Feds banned it. I thought about trying it just to see if it really was the hype everyone said it was but never got to. I didn't have the guts to try it once it was banned - I don't want to end up in jail over something stupid.

There was another substance that was basically synthetic THC, but I forgot what the street name of it is.

Both of these substances are still available on the black market. You just have to know your connections. I have no desire now to try either of these.

As for 'designer drugs', I typically think of things like LSD, GHB, XTC, etc as the 'designer drugs', however they are still drugs and can still do a lot of damage.

As for prescription drugs, they need to find a way to make it much more difficult for abusers of prescription painkillers to obtain these, while leaving the honest people alone.

Perhaps give patients only a 30-day supply with a required visit/checkup before a refill can be filled. Far as I know doctors currently prescribe a 90-day supply and tell their patients to 'take as needed'. To me, this is a setup for disaster for someone who has done narcotics in the past or has that 'addiction prone' personality.

What's sad is those who do abuse prescription drugs often don't see themselves as addicts because they justify it by saying they aren't doing 'real drugs' like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, etc. Thing is, they are chasing after the very same effects that these 'real drugs' have through prescription drugs.

Drugs are bad for you, plain and simple. :cool2:

I know people who wouldn't put marijuana in the same "real drugs" category as alcohol or nicotine. *shrugs*

That's their choice. To me, it's not worth going jail over something that's 'harmless'. As long as it's banned - I plan to steer clear of it. There's a reason why the FDA decided a long time ago that marijuana is dangerous.
