As for the press, That is a whole 'nother issue because the press LOVES to get any information that seems to be too good to be true. Often time, the press tends to exaggerate it a bit to make it sound like it's really believable.

Yes, I guess so. I guess I just wanted to make the point that the press are focusing just on one type of abuse on one type of setting which is why I wanted to make poll to show lots of differant settings. But I've not done a very good job of explaining myself.

It worries me about parents of deaf children reading the paper and sending their deaf children to mainstream because they read about abuse at deaf school.

as babyblue said, abuse happens in a variety of settings. abuse also happens at schools for the blind, so schools for the deaf are not the only places where this can occur.

Yes I agree. It can also happen at mainstream schools.

Sorry you were bullied too. Were you at a blind school?

thanks, dreama. if you don't mind my asking, what did bullies do to you?

to answer your question, i attended public school from kindergarten through 12th grade.

however, sometimes i wish i had attended a school for the blind. in some ways, i think my life would have been so much easier as a result.

having said that, i can't complain too much about my high school days. i had some of my best memories during that time. it was awesome. :D

by the way, i know several people who attended a school for the blind and were raped and/or suffered mental abuse while there. it's sad. :(

When I was at high school this boy decided he didn't want a 'mental deafo' in his class. So he made life very difficult for me. For example he spread rumours saying I was cheating in my exams. He read my diary that I kept in my school locker to stop mom from reading it. He made a lot of things up about the Diary. He also sent a letter supposedly by this boy I had a major crush on saying to go to his house and take all my clothers off. Fortunately my parents wouldn't let me. Who knows what would have happened if I'd gone.

When I got back I was told it was all a hoax and these boys kept attacking me and broke my FM reciever. The boy I fancied was part of their gang. They said they wanted 20 pounds or they would let everyone read all the love letters I'd sent to this boy. Since I didn't pay up they let everyone read the letters. They also kept blocking my path to stop me catching my bus home. In the end it just got too much so I left to go to another school.

i'm sorry that happened to you. did things improve at the next school you attended?

I put (pull options) "No, i was lucky."
I heard about some parents aren't proud of their deaf kid/ kids. they did abuse their kid/kids. where they live, it is in AZ. How sad!!!!!

That's all right. That is why I wanted to ask you to clarify this so that way I and others can understand you better and to see where you are coming from. :)

Yeah, sometime the media portrays the image in a different light. Sometime it can be good but on the other hand, it isn't. It just depends on how the media portrays it.

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences. Life in mainstream education was no bed of roses for me either. I was bullied so much at one mainstream school that I left to go to a Partial Hearing Unit.

At one point I begged to be transferred to a new school for a new start but my parents refused. Their only suggestion was that I talk to a therapist. While that would have been nice, it still wouldn't have gotten to the source of the problem. This was in 4th grade when I was being relentlessly targeted by bullies.

The bullying never stopped until I graduated high school. It got to the point that a bully actually kicked me out of my senior prom, so I never had a senior prom. It makes me start tearing up just thinking about it, so I wipe my eyes then push the pain back inside where it belongs. My junior prom was just as bad. I never had an actual date, but ironically a friend of mine, a very rare guy indeed, said here, let me take pictures with you. So we did, he paid for my photos. Wish I could say I had him as a mate now, but neither of us really felt the urge to date so it never went beyond friendship. While the photos were nice, Im still reminded that I spent the night off to the side and watched everyone else dance.

I think because I was in a vulnerable state of mind, my ex saw that in me and used it to take advantage of me. It was a very bad relationship, and I wish I could just go back in time and undo the moment I told him I would marry him for the sake of our child. I wanted my daughter to grow up in a two parent home and not become a fatherless child. Well, my fears become true when I had to put my foot down and say enough is enough and that the marriage just wasn't worth the abuse. If he wasn't verbally cutting me down to size, he tried to use me as a punching bag. While I always fought back against the knocks, it was hard for me to fight back against his words.

I recently did a google search because I am looking into Deafness and abuse. Because of a deaf character in my novel. I didn't find what I wanted.
I just found a lot of articles about abuse in deaf schools from the press. So I wanted to do a poll to put things in perspective.

I've edited this since It seems I didn't make myself very clear the first time round. I hope I make myself clearer this time?

there's a book abt a deaf girl got abused..."I was #87"..it good book. They think she's retard so put her in a place the where mental retard people live there. Teacher keep abused her and every1. Then stepmom abused her too..They didnt know that she was deaf. thought she wont talk or anything.

just a polite correction. the terms "retard" and "mental retard" are offensive and no longer used today. instead, the proper terms are "children with mental disabilities" or "children with cognitive disabilities." just thought i'd mention that for your information.

sorry, I tried to remember how to spelling disabilities. so I used retard or mental retard instead..cuz of this book used the word so I explained abt what book is about.

that book actually used the word "retard?" i didn't know that. i wrongfully thought you deliberately used that term. please accept my apologies, damienmommy.

How old is this book that you speak of? Perhaps at time of printing that term was widely accepted.

This book took place in the 1950's

:hmm:

i find it unusual that a book would actually use the terms "retard" or "mentally retarded." then again, it's not uncommon for publications in third world countries to use the term "deaf and dumb," so i guess anything is possible.

however, sometimes i wish i had attended a school for the blind. in some ways, i think my life would have been so much easier as a result.

When I was 7 or 8 years old I went to the school for the blind in Janesville, WI on a field trip, and it was a very interesting trip.

that's true, dreama.

this is a little off-topic, but in elementary school i used to be bullied and made fun of because of my blindness. other classmates used to deliberately trip me in the hallway and step on my cane as i walked by.

That's horrible and pretty mean. I'm sorry that happened to you.

thanks, lucia. :)

if truth be told, i *hated* elementary school.

fortunately though, things got much better for me in middle and high school.

in fact, high school was one of the best times of my life. :D
