Anyone of you who does not mind using the term "Deafie"?

or does not like the term?

:fruit:

In the Deaf community, we have always used the word for ourselves as "d/Deafies" and for hearing people "hearies" for many years on end. We don't mind that and I don't know about hearies that might be bothered being called that. I am comfortable being call "Deafie" because I am Deaf and can sign ASL. :D

I used to be on Say What Connect and the term was used all the time. I never thought it offensive. We had some heated debates akin to what Jillo would do here. Still, it did not rise to the level of offense, as I remember it. Oh, they were not without contention, but I don't remember people being banned.

Wirelessly posted

I think it's an endearing term. Don't mind it all - makes me feel like I'm Home.

In biking community, I often uses word roadies with other bike people. It's not a real word, but I don't mind. Use deafies if you want.

The term "deafie" has never been applied to me notwithstanding I am bilateral DEAF since December 20, 2006. Likewise with "hearie" as well.

Restricted only to "some" in the Deaf community-presumably?Aside: except this computer group-AllDeaf.com.

I had NEVER encounter it until I came to the forum! And I have wanted to scream or something to protest ever since I saw it the first time and continue to be very irritated by both "deafie" and "hearie". They both seem very demeaning to either group.

I am not sure how much my age and where I grew up has to do with that reaction. There seems to be virtually no d/Deaf community in the small town (about 15,000) where I live. At least, I have been unable to find it.

The only way to go into the Deaf community is the big city where you might live close by. If you have to travel a little farther to get to the city where there is a large Deaf community. I live on the island but I traveled to the average city where there is a small Deaf community. Toronto and Ottawa has the biggest Deaf communities. You did not mention where you live. Usually you might find them where there is (name of state) Hearing Society, or bowling alley (lots of Deafies go there to socialize and just have fun bowling), or you can ask the d/Deafie where to find Deaf community or Deaf events (both are same thing). I hope that help you where you might be interest in finding the Deaf events.

I don't think that 15,000 people can not be in a small town. It should be a city like an average city. Big town might be about right. There should be a Deaf event if there were some d/Deaf people living there. 15,000 people can not be all perfect. There are disabilities, blind and deaf people who are living in your city among the perfect people. You just have to look and find it. :cool2:

I have no objection with this term. In fact, I use it all the time, so much that it becomes natural for me, lol.

Before I started reading here I thought Deafie was an insult because a long time ago I watched a movie where the hearing kids made fun of a deaf kid by saying "deafie".

By calling yourselves Deafies, it takes the power AWAY from the insult. That's great.

Oh and I don't mind being called Hearie as long as it's not Stupid Speaking Hearie.

Its part of Deaf culture, I don't use it much but my wife uses it all the time. but I refer to myself as Furry all the time. its just a word that we identify ourselves with.

Doesn't bother me at all. Makes perfect sense to me! :)

I first heard it here on AD and I have no problem with it at all.

If you knew my last name, you'd see why I answer to anything.

I find it childish...and akin to calling an Italian a 'Dago.' It carries an offensive smack to it...not for me...

this is similar to '******' being called ****** from whites is an insult, but amougst homies, familar black neigbourhood or just another black , its taking power, identfy in themselves as '******s' or 'nigga' is a mark of belonging. Same thing with Deafie...
being called deafie from outsiders would be an insult - yes...OR from a say - a more streetwise or social wise person might say it with intent or identifying one to belong a different group, as a particulirity like 'spotting' no insult or remark intended just 'this one is deaf - a deafie' she/he must talk different from 'us' they use hands -interesting bunch...leave them alone but see if they like weed...
or something like to that effect...
