Deafhood

I think it's best if we stop bickering with kokonut because it's precisely what he wants. It reinforces his cynical belief toward deafies - something that he probably developed at Gallaudet University.

We should try and listen to him instead of letting him dismantle your view but the problem is - I don't know exactly what's he preaching about. I don't know what's his stance is. I don't know what's his view is. Let him explain his agenda/view instead of letting him attack your belief and assert himself.

Group Think? DH is geared every thing culturally deaf and its political ideology? Simple Acceptance? Please elaborate more on that.
You have a point there. For the record, Deafhood has not been easy - in part because I was quite audist when I was younger.

Quick question.. (Don't shoot) but, I can see what Koko is saying.. basically if one can accept themself in who they are.. Why the need for others as a group to accept him/her?? A person can get along with everybody.. Like Koko I speak, sign, socialize with hearing and deaf people. Why do they have to choose a specific group?

Ok about the Deafhood journey... Every living person has their own journey in life. Their journey is personal and based on their own life. Their journey does not have to be just about deafhood, It can be about any obstacle in their life. So a person basically can choose what journey they want to take.

Babyblue - I am all for people having their own opinions. And if he doesn't want to identify with the deaf or deafhood, fine by me. It's his attitude and tone that's irksome.

It's deeply personal based on many things in life. What you do with your life is your own and who you choose to interact with. No need for an ideological label.

Oh, I identify with deaf and hard of hearing people, sympathize with late deafened people, and their communication preferences. I interact in my own way. I just don't agree with the label and the politicization behind it. So, in essence, I have no need for that word.

It is obvious that you have experienced a journey to have reached that point where you identify with d/hh individuals. Everyone interacts in their own way. How I interact would be different from how you interact or others. That is called "Deafhood". It is just a word to describe that each deaf person has his or her own journey that is all. :cheer:

Deafhood is not a GROUP or CLUB. It is just a word explaining one's experience in their own journey into identifying themselves as Deaf. That is all.

From what I understand. Deafhood is a journey of accepting that you are Deaf, not broken and do not feel a need to be fixed or cured.

Correct me if I am wrong..

that's what I'm asking you about because everybody's got different interpretation. Exactly what is the "political label" and politicization behind it? I want to know your interpretation.

maybe somebody can repost my questions and ask him? :dunno:

What are his audist views exactly?

The same as any other audist. His history here...not just the replies in others' threads, but many of the threads he has started, speak for themselves.

I also want to know the same thing.

You are not wrong. It is the process of developing an identity that includes deafness, rathet than placing it in the position of being an external factor to your identity.

I'm sure not the one to make your post visable!

However, labels are a part of life. Each and every one of us uses them and applies them in various ways every minute of every day. For someone to claim they use no labels in identifying themselves is absurd.

I am a kimchi-eating redneck gone hipster! :laugh2:

However one can still incorporate taking advantage of technology in his or her deafhood journey.

Yep. My label for myself has always been deaf. It comes first before other labels that I have made for myself over the years.
