Deafhood? No thanks.

Effluence? You probably meant "influence."

Skepticism aptly describes that group about "deafhood." This FB group is simply saying "no thanks." Although I can't imagine people getting upset over that for not kowtowing to a made up feel-good philosophy. Also, nothing wrong in letting people know about this group either. Rather suprising that some actually objected in what I did in my blog in announcing a new FB group.

False statement. This was done with years of research in England, and is actually a class at Gallaudet.

Ahh, It is where the Deaf Militants gather up. I came across people like that. Since I wear hearing aids. I was too "Hearing" for them.

Not really. And I would go as far to disagree with the latter (you wearing hearing aids and being too hearing for them...).

Everyone with a hearing loss is a part of the "Deafhood". There are a few people that decided to twist the term around to a negative sense.

Ok. I guess I am a part then, but some of the people who twist it really scare me and make me sad.

I wanted to clarify that the term deafhood been around for a while. It's nothing new. The FB group is new because it's their reaction to people who wanted to leave deafread (there were alot debates on AB bills, and it gotten personal, I guess. And audist) . they would never create the FB group if AB bill didn't started it all. The "deafhood, NO THANKS" support deafread but certain people in this group also write to people that pretty much tell people to ignore some deaf people When it come to deaf issues-- I think that's encouraging audism.

yes, anyone who have a hearing loss, it doesn't matter how well you hear with technology or what type of communication you use, is part of deafhood. Just like anyone who get pregnant have already started their journey to motherhood.

I and everybody else have their own personal journey. Is there a "Personhood Foundation" out there, too ? People see no need on the politicization of a word but apparently some do.

There's motherhood... So yeah..
Your personal journey with hearing loss is a part of deafhood, no matter how you cut it.

I can see you saying no thanks for the negative sense of it. I say the same. However from seeing what it really is all about, I have to say we all are a part of it. This is "politicization of a word" or not.

These who are deterring their selves from checking into what "Deafhood" is really all about tells me only one thing; that they chase the negative media and base their judgement on that instead of seeing what it all is about, what is all out there about this certain topic that they are learning about...

Just saying.

There's alot of negativity, opinions, politic in motherhood as well, but none of us will deny we are in motherhood.

Never heard about deafhood. :dunno:

It's another word for "ALL DEAF" I think P. LADD (I can't quite remember the author) was the one who started this term, but we were in it all along before he wrote about it and made a speech about it. When I wrote, "we were in it all along" , I want point out that's where Ladd got his study from and came up with the term "Deafhood"

Not really. Just that some people prefer to keep it simple and leave it at that. Many are unwilling to do just that and use it to make their own political hay to drive their own internal agenda. Probably 99% of the hearing loss population never heard of "deafhood." It's an internal thing.

Not really either....

I am one of these who keeps it simple.

And you're right, almost nobody has heard of the term... I didn't until you brought it up. Then I did some research, and met several people in real life that actually has taken the classes on this recent Sunday. To the best of my knowledge there has been very few that has taken the classes.

From what they described - It was pretty good.

Even your testimonials of being able to speak and hear is a part of the deafhood. Just saying...

Why deny deafhood? :)

I think Kokonut's problem is with the poltics of the people who "claim" deafhood. Like those who oppose parental choice and seek to end childhood implantation. I don't think he wishes to deny anyone their journey, but instead declines to be a part of that (in his eyes negative) political movement.

Gotcha. If the last sentence is correct, I'm totally with him on that.

The problem here is the focus on hearing loss, and not about the person. Just the reason why we don't see "paralyzedhood," "blindhood," "mentally-challengedhood", "deafhood," "stutterhood", "deaf/blindhood" ...etc.... That's not keeping it simple. It's focusing on what you have or don't have. You're emphasizing on something. Mine and many others' emphasis deals with the person's own journey regardless of what it is without the need to label it. For some reason, people want to label it, define it, and constrain it.

No thanks.

Well.. If you took a glimpse in the classes you'd have seen it is all over the board (Deaf, deaf, "hoh", "oral deafs", ci deafs, ci purists, codas, hearing people that are involved, parents of deaf, family of deaf...) Not just hearing loss. It also displays all the issues we all go through. It also simulates us to learn more.

I'm talking specifically about the research and the classes that are out there for us to take. We all are a part of a very intertwined community.

But the term being thrown around like a label, being politically motivated is a distaste for me.

I will probably never run out the front door and tell everyone "Hey, I have a Deafhood!" I'm just glad there is research that has been done on the community and how it interacts with the world. The fact still stands: we all are a part of it.

Your blogs probably have contributed to the research, if not, it probably will be contributed to a future research. :) Just saying.

Regardless, many feel no need for labeling based on their current condition when it comes to their own personal journey and the challenge they face. It's a personal one. No need to define it.
