Deaf woman injured in hit-and-run horror - News - lep.co.uk
A deaf woman was left in agony after being ploughed into by a hit-and-run driver on a pedestrian crossing.
Bernadette Corrigan, 52, of The Paddock, Fulwood, suffered five broken metatarsals in her right foot when she was knocked down as she crossed Sharoe Green Lane, in Fulwood.
Bernadette, who has been completely deaf since contracting meningitis as a youngster, walked onto a crossing close to St Vincent’s Road at 9.30am on Friday, when she was hit by a black car travelling towards Royal Preston Hospital.
She staggered back to her flat still wearing a shoe which had been ripped apart by the impact, as well as managing to keep hold of her dog Tillie.
Her partner Michael Sullivan, 52, who lives in the same block of flats, called the emergency services after she recounted what happened using sign language.
He said: “She had white jeans on and when the traffic officer came he looked at them and said she had been hit on the right thigh and she has gone over.
“He ran over her right foot. She managed to get home on her own steam and told me what happened. I rang the police and the ambulance.
“She had an x-ray and they said she has smashed all her metatarsals and she may have metal pins in her foot. She has a badly bruised shoulder and grazing too.”
Bernadette who works at Deafway, in Brockholes Brow, Preston, was unable to identify the model of car but said the driver had a grey beard.
Mr Sullivan said crossing roads was already a challenging task for Bernadette who has been left shaken by the incident.
He said: “She is registered disabled because she is profoundly deaf.
“She cannot hear so she is already impaired when walking. Her sense of balance is out of sync as it is with deaf people.
“That guy who hit her is probably in shock himself but he should have stopped after running over her foot. If anybody knows anything please get in touch with the police.”
Police, who only confirmed to the Evening Post yesterday that the collision happened, today appealed for help in catching the driver.
PC Gary Heath from the Road Policing Unit, said: “A police investigation is underway and we would appeal to anyone with any information to contact the police on 0845 1 25 35 45 as soon as possible.”
