Deaf students and SCHOOL interpreters??

We have a shortage of TERPS so I can't be picky really..

Yes you can. You are a paying student (even if you're their on a full scholarship etc) and you are entitled to have YOUR needs met.

This isn't like jr high school were your the child and the adults make the choices FOR you ... this is College/University, where you have to advocate and stand up for your rights.

If this interpreter doesn't UNDERSTAND ASL, they need to admit that ... if they have some sort of "I feel this is better for you" attitude, you need to politely remind them that they are their to meet YOUR communication needs, not to offer their opinions on various signing systems.

If you want to use ASL, then you just need to ask for the interpreter to use ASL and that should be the "end of it". If you are having issues with this, then contact your disability services - DHH dept and talk to your contact there and state in writing that you have requested the interpreter use ASL for your classes and they have been reluctant/unwilling or unable to do so and they seem to be under the MIS-impression that they, as the interpreter are the one who chooses which signed language/mode is used with a given client (you)... which is unacceptable and condescending and needs to be addressed immediately.

In university/college, the interpreter "works for you" in the same way the "work for you" if you have a drs appointment, legal appointment etc. You state which mode of signing you prefer and they follow that - they do NOT tell you "which is better" etc ... they interpret as per your request, period.

Depends on the interpreter. One signs in ASL, but uses a lot of SEE Vocab. The other one signs in ASL. I personally can't stand interpreters that use SEE.

If the interpreter has to come from 80miles away or whatever the college still has to pay for that. There are no excuses; you have a right by law to an interpreter and the signing you prefer.
