Deaf or hearing? Some thoughts...

I love (in descending order) metaphors, analogies, similes, and metonymies.

I love metaphors in English as much as I love classifiers in ASL.

Unfortunately my limited vocabulary and skill in ASL prevents me from even attempting anything like it while signing. I think this book might help me understand its use but no way can I afford it.

That is expensive! But was it a metaphor? Or and analogy?
(I am also bad at knowing adverb, adjective, etc.)

It is a metaphor.

Would you like to start a topic on this type of language use, or pm each other, or start a group ?

(I also have problems with which is an adverb or adjective etc.)

Group would be good. But I am afraid I am pretty old and still can't keep them straight! I wouldn't mind trying.

Old is good. I am a great grandfather.

Still a kid compared to my mother though. Long story, but she was 30 years older than she was.

I will try to figure out how to start a group. Gotta go see my daughter -- who is a grand mother herself. :D

I think everyone who knows anything about ASL can and should be a teacher. If nothing else teach them to be comfortable with ASL and Deaf people. The larger the signing community the better for everyone who signs.

Too bad I did not quote it. If you did not see it, she basically said she goes to a hearing school and deaf guys are way beneath her.

It was extremely offensive.

She probably deleted it because there was no way anyone would see it her way or give her a positive response.

I did NOT say (or think) "basically" that deaf guys are way beneath me. That would indeed be very offensive! I think I've expressed myself too badly, that's also the reason why I deleted this.

Nor did I see her original post, but as a hearing guy -- Once I found out she thought deaf guys were beneath her -- I would not want anything to do with her either.

If she is on a pedestal it must be in a very shallow fountain of water.

Although this is all a misunderstanding, it is indeed a nice metaphor...

If it's a misunderstanding, why don't you clarify it instead of removing your post?

BTW I'm a deaf guy who loves cars, sexy chicks, dumb jokes, and guns. Please get in touch so I can idolize you.

Amazon has it for $69... a bit cheaper but not by much :)

i think i would perfer to be with someone deaf or hoh simply for the common experience and understanding of having crappy hearing.

in my experiences of dating and relationships all the hearing people i dated ended up dumping me or doing the "i'm just not into you" (like from that book/movie) saying it wasn't gonna work out between us coz of the communication problems and that they were tired of trying to understand me or be understood by me (too much writing on paper or repeating our words, i guess), and that it wasn't fun to have to stop watching the hockey/football/baseball game to explain what what was going on, or not doing things coz i wasn't able to hear the music or whatever.

so yeah, seems like i would get along better and not have communication problems with a deaf or hoh person, or could i be wrong?

also, pickings are pretty slim out there for me as i would want to be with someone who has the same education level as me (PhD) and here in Canada it is like winning the lottery, pretty rare, lol.
