which would you prefer to have - a deaf or hearing child and why???

now no bashing on each other for each other's personal reasons. I would prefer a hearing child so things will be easier and will be more independent. If the child was to be deaf, I would know what to do and more accepting of it than a hearing parent. I think about this a lot since most of my boyfriends are hearing.

Really, I don't care if my child is hearing or deaf. I would obviously prefer that my child be deaf, but it really doesn't matter either way.

hmm i dont care if i have deaf or hearing kids. ti is the most important that my kid is HEALTHFUL !

Right, SG, my daughter is hearing I was worry how to teach her speak we are deaf now she knows signs pretty good we love to talk by sign how I communicate with her, and she goes speech class she got some voice-words i may undy read her lips, when we were at restaurant my husband went in restroom daughter chased him i told her stay with me dad will be back no around buffet she looked there and pointed and said dad is over there surprised me i didnt teach her like words "..over there" also her grandma has heard her voice some new words she learned alot, i glad she knows both speaking and signing. If she was born deaf I think she will learn sign first same she does already now, and doctor thinks her hearing level goes down now I really don't care I love her any way :)

At the deaf club last night...I saw a hearing 4 yrs old boy complaining to his father how a diff deaf girl kept on pushing him...

He was signing furiously and didn't even bother to use his mouth to talk. When I first saw him and he walked up to me and said "Hello how you doing?" and I just spoke out "Fine" (since I was carrying some potluck pans and couldn't sign)...he just walked off..and I didn't have a chance to put down all those things I was carrying to sign it out...then when I hunted for him..I told him, "You asked me if I do good? Yes, I am doing fine" then he said, "you silly, you hearing, you not need come look for me and tell me that in sign..I already heard you already" lol.

Cute kid and seems smart for a 4 yrs old kid.

ah, what a smart kid.

I never really care if my kid is deaf or hearing. just being healthy baby and communicate with me very well.

I don't care if my future child is deaf or hearing. I obviously would love to have a deaf child, but it isn't a demand. I only want to see my future child to be born and raised a healthy kid.

Frankly, I would rather to have hearing, deaf, blind, or deaf-blind kid than to have a mentally retarded kid because of communication.

If my future child is born hearing, ASL is more likely to be his/her first language. Yes, I will ensure that the hearing child develops speech and auditory language on schedule. I can't speak or lipread at all, but my husband-to-be can. So... the child will probably learn how to talk from his/her father. We have hearing relatives and friends so they would be a good assist. Also, I might consider about placing the hearing child at a day care for the sake of speech development.

I have 50%/50% chance of producing deaf children. However, I have to keep in mind that 90% of deaf children have hearing parents.

My boys are hearing already, and they both sign very well for their own ages. I don't mind if they're hearing or deaf, as long as they can communicate with me and Dad well and are healthy overall. :thumb:

Me, I wouldn't really care. I have a 50% chance of having hoh kids but b/c my syndrome also includes a significent risk of depression,(something I would NOT want ANYONE to go through) I would probaly try to adopt a deaf/hoh kid or even many deaf/hoh kids!
I would prefer a hearing child so things will be easier and will be more independent.
I know many parents want to make things easier for their kids but I wouldn't nessarly want my kids to have an easy life. I would want them to be challenged and be happy and know the value of hard work and how to emphasise with other people.
In my experiance most kids who have an easy life turn out to be stuck up snobs who don't know the meaning of hard work, and who are out of touch about what real life is like. Sure it was hard growing up deaf, but big deal! Lots of people have a hard time while growing up. Blacks, Jewish, Asian, GLB and many other minorities have a hard time as well!
My buddy McInnis is an out lesbian and gets tormented a lot b/c of it. However I remember talking to her one time when she was on duty and she said that she would not trade being a lesbian for anything in the world! (this is a woman who has known she was gay ever since she was a small kid!) More independant? I don't think hearing kids are more indepenadant then deaf kids. I am deaf and I am a lot more independant then many of my hearing peers!

:werd: in ref to being more independent than the hearing peers! my older sister grew up being so dependent im like :ugh: and im much more independent than her  :-x

as for MOI and which i wanna for child ofc id hope to have deaf child to raise -- but deaf or hearie dont matter as long as the child is healthy and happy it works with me

Hearing or Deaf no matter what! My son is hearing and he's learning ASL
I do still wish to get deaf child, but i still love my son. important that we communicate

Right on DeafSCUBA........I have 2 sons and 1 daughter all hearing and I love them heaps!!! It dont matter if they hearing or deaf as long as they are healthy . :D

It does not matter to me, as long as they are healthy. BUT Unfortunately, we are in the society where the CI have been hot issues now.

I rather have kids who are hearing so we do not have any deals with CI issues.
Because If our kids are born deaf. Do I have to introduce deaf kid about CI or not? If I don't do that then I will feel that I am selfish for not sharing this information with this kid. Or what if deaf kid wants CI so badly then later, once kid gets older and blame me for allowing kid to have CI when kid prefers to be in a deaf community. CI things sometimes causes you to be confused to be between the deaf world or the hearing world. Kid will not feel fit with either one.. I am pretty sure that there are more than i know about CI.. I could be wrong about that because I have lack of knowledges abotu CI since I am not interested in CI due to a BIG surgery. Eww.

Needless to say, i prefer hearing kids to give ourselve so peace. of course, there will have more problem than CI issues and soemthing else. There is always something else to deal with it. :)

by the way, i have a hearing daughter and expect to have baby boy on July 17.. Ill see if he is born hearing. but hope he's healthy first!

Understand how you would feel about that...but WHAT if you did have a intellectually disabled child? Will you still love him/her no matter what and do what you can to make life good for him/her? If I had one...I would do all what I can to make life easy and happy for the child. I realise a lot of frustration will come up with raising an intellectually disabled person

ERmm..I think I better stop as I think this is going off-topic.

Well, many of deaf parents would immediately accept their child to be deaf or HoH. That is because they know what the life is like being deaf or HoH.

Many hearing parents have no idea that deaf children can live a normal life. That's why it is very important to be educating those types of parents.

I agree with SG.

I grew up in hearing world. Yes my mother did not know which way was the best to raise me: 1) put in deaf schools or 2) put me in public schools and raise me as her mother raised her. I am very lucky that my mother chose the old-fashioned method of raising me by putting me in public schools, trying to establish deaf education program at the school I attended. I was able to maintain the same level as any other hearing students. I graduated only deaf with a 3.2 GPA in a higher level than any other deaf schools could provide.

The point is, it doesn't matter what kind of disability the child has, it is the parent's choice to whether raise the child on its own or have the state raise it (ie deaf institute). Be more acceptable. As for myself, I wouldn't care either deaf or hoh or even hearing child because I KNOW that I want to raise my child with a lot of love and a better education.

Other thing that really gave me an impact among deaf parent with a hearing child. I was at a softball field, waiting for my game. This deaf man, hes fluent in ASL! Very conceptual, very ASLish. The child, his daughter... only 5 years old could even express in ASL better than ME! She would speak first to her father, when her father gets frustrated and told her to "sign", she would just fluently sign ASL like it wasn't hard for her. That really hit me. Looking at my sisters... hell, they can't sign! (no offense)

It all boils down to their emotional/physical health, whether they are deaf or not.

I am a single mom of 2 daughters and they are hearing. I have a deaf niece. My brother tells me that he wishes he has a hearing daughter but I tell him that it does not matter as long as they all have confidence, good health and ability to suceed in their own lives.

My daughters are proud of me because they keep saying how amazed they are by me being able to do anything and I try to teach them compassion for other individuals, regardless of who they are.

You daughters look up at you as Mom who is brilliant and able do anything. You are very good discussing with clients who asked you some questions about medical issues. The girls admire you alot ! ;)
