Deaf Nation Expo/ All Deaf Meet up November Chicago, IL.

Also I am not in Chicago as of right now.. Let me see what I can do though, there are many places to stay near the airport that are reasonably priced but thats a little far from everything downtown...

The plans have changed...we are doubting that we can go. Sorry for the inconvience. See you guys next time.

Damn, me too Sequoias! Aww...well, what I'm really saying is that I thought it might be 50-50 chance for me to go to Chicago on Nov. 6th but yesterday my bf just brought up an important event for him to attend - DSW in Rhode Island on November 7th for himself as the first special Deaf wrestler guest to compete with Matt Calamare, the other Deaf wrestler from Massachusetts. He wanted me to go along with him and be supportive for his competetion. If I skip Chicago thing, it would save me a bunch of $$$. Oh well. There'll always be next time for another Deaf event.

I'm still working on it.

I plan on being there Novemeber 5th at 9 pm but someone is going to have to tell me where I can stay for 2 or 3 nights cheap.

Where are we going, what are we doing?

Let's recap what the plans are so far?

Yea, always other time for a deaf event, for sure. Probably next year who knows. We will be going to California and Washington for the summer on May or June.

Alright, this is only a few weeks away. We need some solid answers from people.

Who's coming? How long do you plan to stay? Etc.

Dgirl has been doing some research and found a good place to stay near Wicker Park, which has some good bars and dance clubs within walking distance. 4 people per room. Cost is about 30$ per night per person.

Unless a gathering is planned for Friday night, I plan to come up Saturday morning on the Amtrak or catch a ride if I can. I'll figure out how to get to the Expo, which is kinda far from the city center, and then stay the night in Chitown with all you peeps. I'll take the Amtrak back to Lafayette Early Sunday evening.

I'm in. Who else? Time to lay out your plans.

Yaaaaaaaaaay!!! I finally will get to meet you all in person..:dance2::dance2::dance2::dance2: that is if it's ok for a hearing person to join in.

Hmmm Wicker park may not be the best part of town for yall to be staying. I would advise against it. I'll let you know if I find out otherwise but it is right next to a fairly high crime area.

Edit: Yes as I suspected that is a high crime area. If you like, I could recommend something.

Wicker Park Crime Rate

The Chicago Police Department has undertaken many initiatives to decrease the higher than average crime rates within the city of Chicago. The Chicago Police Department works closely with residents through grass-roots programs such as the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) to solve neighborhood crimes. CAPS brings together the police, the community, and other city agencies as necessary to proactively identify and solve neighborhood problems. Index crime in Chicago has dropped 26% since the program was implemented in 1995.
The city of Chicago also allows residents to ensure their own safety through accessing a database of reported crimes. Websites such as Chicago Crime and Citizen I Cam assist police and residents in problem-solving and combating crime within their neighborhoods.
Index crime rates are listed below for the entire city of Chicago and can also be found at the Chicago Police Department’s website. This table shows crime rates in Wicker Park, and index crime rates to compare Wicker Park, the city of Chicago, and the nationwide average.

C'mon, it's not like Wicker Park is on the Southside. We'll most likely be traveling in large groups. Shouldn't be much of a problem.

Consider Itasca.
Itasca is a nice suburb that is located near the airport, trains and major highways and is close to the expo. There are also many pizza places and pubs and night clubs in the area. This is a nice area. It's easy access to everything and situated along the Metra Milwaukee District / West Line for easy access to and from the city.

Hotel very close to the Metra train stop so you would have fast inexpensive access to Chicago.

Dude. Seriously I would not recommend it.

I have been to Wicker Park several times. It's full of trendy shops and posh restaurants. Yes, very crime ridden... Also, My friend, a female, lived there with 4 other women for 3 years while she was in medical school. Never had a problem.

C'mon, this is absurd. Anytime you go to a big city, you're risking a little. It doesn't matter what part of town you stay. If people are afraid of crime, they should not go. All I can say is that I've been to Chicago several times, have walked around the streets of it at all hours of the night in a group of people, and never had a problem. Criminals tend to target a single or couple people. As I said, we'll most likely be traveling around in groups.

Staying in a suburb far out of town is not an option to me. I want to be close to the center of activity. I want to walk among the skyscrapers and experience the big city feel. Why would people want to fly into "The Second City" and stay 20 miles out of town?

I suppose it's up to the group, so let's hear what everyone has to say. As for me, I'm not worried about Wicker Park.
