Of course it’s not the first time you’ve heard of this happening. It happened to your own sister about a month ago. And I’m damn proud of her for putting her foot up somebody’s ass instead of just going and finding someplace else to eat.

How many of you know who Terrylene Sacchetti is? She’s a lesser known Deaf actress who mostly does local theater here in Los Angeles, but she’s appeared in a few TV shows and movies. In 1990 she successfully sued the Burger King Corporation for their refusal to serve her at one their franchises. As part of the settlement, Burger King had to agree to make changes to their internal policies regarding deaf customers using the drive-thru windows. If just a few more Deaf people would step up to the plate and demand equal access or else, maybe the day will come when all fast food chains will be forced to install touchpad ordering at the drive-thru. Not only would that make things a hell of a lot easier for d/Deaf people, it would make things a lot faster and easier for everybody.

True I have heard a lot about it.

The last part you mentione, I totally agree with you!!!

I never liked drive throughs anyhow..They always short the order. but yeah I agree it should be a service that considers all.

Some of the chains in my area are sort of halfway there. They don’t have touchpads, but a lot of them have big LED screens above the speaker box which shows what the cashier is entering. Which is great, because even hearing people can’t understand half the gibberish that comes out of those boxes.

Pizza Hut really had a stroke of genius when they started accepting orders online. It was even smarter that they set it up so that your address and credit card number could be stored in a cookie. All you have to do is place the order, verify the address with a check box, and click send. Even though I don’t have any problems using the phone, they still get all my pizza business just because it’s so hassle free.
Papa Johns does that already. We've also got a lot of fast food places that have display monitors for our orders. :thumb:

I second that also!....I have three children and I remember there was a time when my son was only 5 and my other son was 1 and it was hard for me to held his hand , carry my one year old son and even carry the foods....Goodness it almost like I am moving out of the fast food resturants

I believe using a drive-thru is for Both ( hearing and deaf )...We all live in one world!...Got to be fair or else you lose customers! :D

I wouldn't be surpise if the owner did lie to cover himself from a serious lawsuit....

This is not the first time I've heard of a fast food resturant giving a deaf customer a hard time at the drive-thru window!....

Ok, not to fuel the flames, but i've worked at mcdonalds, and the way the drive through was set up, its really hard to take orders from someone if they drive past the box. It happened 2 times when i worked there oh so long ago, and they had to find an open register away from the drive through, ring the person up, then give them the food. Because they didnt wait at the box to talk it really screwed up the flow, and people behind them had to wait longer for their food. It doesnt say what time this all took place, but if it was during dinner or a rush i can see what the manager would have gotten upset. Alot of stress, plus them being in a rush, i have no doubt if it happened then there would be a miscomunication, the manager wouldnt have time to try and figure out what the driver was doing, and the deaf driver would be trying to write something with an impatient manager not wanting to wait because of a rush. If deaf people want to use a drive through you need to use common sence, is it super buisy now, would me going through really screw things up for everyone? Now i'm not saying deaf people shouldnt use a drive through, not at all. But you have to understand if you go into 1 while its buisy they may not have patience or understanding to keep you happy and coming back for future visits. This is in no way a slam to anyone deaf, i'm just really sick of people on this board putting a 1 sided "they're out to get us" spin on alot of the posts here.

Interesting view - thanks for sharing it with us. :D I will certainly keep that in mind when I see a busy drive thru. None of those here in Norway, anyway.

It's another good reason to implement technology that works for everyone. Touch pad with menu options at the drive thru's, anyone?

I do understand ...and I also used to work at BurgerKing... ( are you aware that there are people out there who is unable to hear the speaker box not just only deaf people )...When it gets ' busy ' we are to tell the driver to pull up because sometimes their order isn't done or wouldn't have to keep the other cars waiting in line for their foods....it goes the same way with deaf people or people who are unable to hear the speaker box we tell them to pull up when they finished placing their order at the window.....that way it wouldn't effect others who are waiting for their order also!...

Like I said, I understand where you are coming from ..but we can't stop a person from using a drive thru that is taken away their right to be treat as a customer...We should served all people no matter what the excuess is....we can always tell them to pull up so we can take care of the cars behind...

Your right, so if you know your going to a drive through try and be prepaired to handle them, its helpful to have a piece of paper with what you want writen down, that way there is alot less confusion. Just so you know, they are usualy fairly rude to us hearing people too, its not just to deaf people, and honestly if i was paid what they were for what they do i wouldn't care about the customer either.

I agree with you Megladon, I would hate to see people using the drive thru and do not know what they want and it takes up all the time and build up the traffic...I saw a sign on one drive thru before and it says "be prepare with your order so we could serve you quickier". But, Some People intend to ignore it. I agree with sometimes Deaf people could be rude to Workers who are trying to understand and communicate with the deaf and the deaf gives them a hard time cuz they do not have a paper and Pen ready. How are they suppose to know what they need. I do use my voice to tell my orders I do not need a Pen and Paper sometimes they can hear me real well through the drive thru some Cannot understand. it depends how Loud I am how Low I am when I am speaking in the Drive Thru.

Very True Megladon,

I agree that there are some deaf people who are rude to hearing people and hearing people are rude to deaf people...so it goes both ways...

Customers sometimes can be rude too....not just workers!.... ;)
