Deaf Issues...Persuasive Essay! Help!!!???

Hi, I'm new to this forum and to the Deaf Culture. I've been teaching myself some sign language for a few years now ever since I took a class in it that only lasted a few weeks. I've been really interested in the language and the culture. Being in that class has influenced me into wanted to be an interpreter for a living.

But anyway, I have to write a paper ... a persuasive essay that is, on something... well to persuade people into something. I would like to write this paper on a Deaf Culture issue. If anyone has any ideas as to what I could write about, please let me know. And if you don't mind, could you tell me if there is a place I could research it a bit more.

How about: Promoting Respect for Deaf Culture then explain all the positives of deaf culture how rich it is how valuable it is to the hearing world to be accepting.

That doesn't mean that if you have anyother ideas you can't give them to me... I'll never know when this information would help me in my future!

It is hard to explain everything about the deaf culture... All i can suggest is that you get involved with lots of deafies . like going to the deaf club,,,use ASL all the times.... if you want to be an interpreter.. you need to get fully invovled with deafies and its culture... you will understand.. will learn more..

Agreed! You can't learn Deaf culture from a book or a hearing instructor. It is something you have to experience and live with to understand. Same thing with ASL. Until you are around Deaf people, you have no idea of what ASL is. What is taught in classes (usually by hearing instructors) and what is used in practice are two different things. Its like learning Italian from a bunch of tapes, and then going to Italy. People will look at you like, "What language are you trying to speak?"
 
Try "As Deaf Culture Turns" for the title because I see deaf culture to be the foundation of a nasty soap opera in the entire deaf society. I'm going to be tweaking deafhood so that it becomes open, inclusive, and friendly to outsiders.

Or title the project, "Hearing Aids and Handcuffs"; lol, pay me no neverminds today; I'm slightly off-kilter! :giggle:
 
maybe the topic of ur persuasive essay would be the big controversial issue of the deaf culture..

little "d" deaf culture vs. big "D" Deaf culture..

would u support deaf or Deaf culture..since deaf culture is for those that are assimilated into the hearing world and use hearing devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. they mostly socialize with their hearing peers and are able to speak and listen. they're also mainstreamed in schools as well..

whereas Deaf culture consists of people that are proud of their deafness and refuse to use any hearing devices such as hearing aids or cochlear implants..they use ASL as their primary mode of communication..and have friends who are Deaf as well..

so..which side do you support?? deaf or Deaf culture..and why??

i think this issue would be a great topic for ur persuasive essay..juss a suggestion.. :D
