I'm wondering if there is any deaf hairstylist out there? how do you communicate with hearing customer? how hard was it getting hired because you're deaf?

I want to be hairstylist since I was 16 I almost enrolled in hair school last year but chickened out and changed my mind and said I want to be accoubntant because uits easy and office work with no communication.
But recently I start to think about it again I cant fight the feeling of wanting to be hairstylist so bad but I cant figure out how i'm going to deal with communicating, prejudice, discrimination, difficult time understanding person because I suck at lipreading I need some visual cues, keywords or some hand gesure to tell me what they want or have poster with haircolor on it so they can point out to what color? etc? how will it all work out? :(

I use ASL, bad lipreader without visual cues or keyword or sounds, cant speak. so HELP. (right now I'm not in any school because I cant make up my mind I cant decide if I should do what will work out for me better or do what I really want, fun job but low pay and all issues? ugh

I honestly wouldn't doubt if there was a place that may be for the Deaf. It is the matter of finding it. Don't ever give up on your dreams other wise you will never be happy.

Bad idea to be hairstylist. Lot hearing people will steal customers from Deaf. Some customers got angry/rude like don't want to write/pen. I learned lot info from my ex-girlfriend who Deaf hairstylist. Just shared with you.

Why hearing people steal customers from Deaf hairstylist? Deaf hairstylist work hard, faster, and more customers than hearing hairstylist so they got angry and tired get steal from Deaf hairstylist.

Hey, this guy just got banned an hour ago? What the heck happened?

Go after your dreams---I think "stealing" would happen with hearies also if one stylist is too good, too fast, too popular. Sometimes the popular ones are just too busy so customers go to the other stylists. I found a great stylist but she's so busy.....other stylists were just as good. When the customers find out how good the other stylists are, then they're more willing to use "whoever" is free! I'd stay with the popular stylist but I don't have the time to wait for her to finish no matter how fast she is, she has to pay attention to the customer sitting in the chair....

Good luck and WTG. I know how you feel about lipreading the customers. I can lipread but I would not dare wait on tables. Too scary.

Become a hairstylist and open up your own shop catering to the deaf, especially in the D.C. area--you would be popular.

She did bad job to my hair once because she had laugh so hard and feel weird to first time to do her own "boyfriend" and made mistake geez. You are lucky to get perfect. Btw She can't speak. I heard she lost interesting it anymore and switch other goal. No idea what she do now. :dunno:

My deaf friend worked in L.A Calif but He quit job cuz its soo difficulty :(

My old friend is hard of hearing. She said hairsylist are not easy because of commucation. She had to give her job up and didnt make good money. That all I knew.

There are 2 deaf hairstylists where I live - both are doing extremely well. One owns her own biz.

If you have passion and patience, you can do it! :)

You will know it for yourself if becoming a hairstylist will be a success or not. Look and explore deep in yourself and think about all the pros and cons of becoming one. Think carefully and if you still want to pursue this type of employment, best of wishes

There's one who works in Arkansas. She's AWESOME at it. I won't say exactly where or which business because of privacy. But she has a long list of clients- both deaf and hearing. :)

Best wishes on this endeavor. If you set up your own business, check out your State's licensing requirements....

i have several deaf friends who wanted to be that position but they gave up because they felt that they were barried because of their disablities. I told them, do not give up and continue fight what they believe to be success. So, i hate to see them to fall down, i've been trying to pull them up and push them to stand.

Do not give up what you dream of.

SkullChick,

Go for it! :P

(see my pm to you)

im sure mostly deaf people would try get jobs as hairstylist that not easy!

my step-brother is owner hair shop in Pittsburg,KS and he earn his own money and hard work and he had lots of client include my step-siblings in KS more best because he best hairstylist in KS but he have license for hairstylist.

I have a friend that's going to school this fall for beautician. no matter what the circumstances are, you just have to prove it to people that you can cut hair and even though, if you're just "stealing" from other hairstylers, it means you're the best! The other hairstylers just have to work their arses to do better. don't give up the dream you want.

I cut my husband's hair and he loves it. but I'm no beautician. you can do it!

There is a young deaf woman (a Puerto Rican, I believe) in Georgia that went to a beauty school and got a job as a hairstylist. I suppose she has deaf/hoh customers since the city she lives and works in has a fairly-sizable deaf community (not in the Atlanta area.) If I still lived there, I would probably go to her.

I have a friend who's deaf and was a hairstylist.
I forgot to add...

I have another friend who is currently a hairstylist.

So, I have 2 friends. One was a hairstylist. She quit that job and is now working an office job. The other is currently a hairstylist.
