The family of a deaf Apple Valley woman is hoping someone has information about a hit-and-run accident that has left the 25-year-old in critical condition.

Authorities say Joan Levasseur was walking across a street in Apple Valley on Friday evening when a vehicle struck her and kept going.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was in critical condition Saturday evening.

A sister-in-law says Levasseur suffered head and brain injuries, as well as multiple fractures to both legs.

Lori Levasseur says there's absolutely no excuse for a someone to be so heartless. She says the family prays the driver will do the right thing and come forward.

Police say the vehicle is likely to have fresh front-end damage from the crash.

The family of a 25-year-old Apple Valley woman critically injured Friday in a hit-and-run accident is asking anyone who knows what happened to come forward.

Joan LeVasseur, who is deaf, was walking eastbound across Cedar Avenue at 153rd Street in Apple Valley about 9:15 p.m. Friday when she was struck by a large light-colored vehicle in the northbound lane.

The vehicle left the scene without stopping.

LeVasseur was transported to Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville before being transferred to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

A spokesperson for HCMC said LeVasseur was in critical condition Saturday evening.

She sustained trauma to the head and has a severe brain injury as a result of the accident, said sister-in-law Lori LeVasseur. She also has multiple fractures to both legs, a fractured pelvis, a broken right hand and lacerations to her face.

"There's absolutely no excuse for somebody to be so heartless," said Lori LeVasseur. "We really hope and pray they will do the right thing and come forward. Joan deserves that — she's a wonderful, wonderful woman."

The vehicle involved may have fresh front-end damage as a result of the accident, Apple Valley police said.

Joan LeVasseur had walked to a Cub Foods store in the area to buy cat food and was waiting for a ride from her fiance when the accident occurred, Lori LeVasseur said.

The case is under investigation by the Apple Valley Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.

She is my very close personal and family friend. We grew together. I did visited her in hospital. She is still in critical condition.

As you read in current event under deaf news that a Apple Valley Deaf woman got hit by hit and run driver.

Joan and I grew up together, was childhood best friends, now very close personal and family friend.

Joan LeVasseur is lying in hospital bed fighting for her life. As of now she is still in critical condition. My mom and I did visited her yesterday. She doesn't look so good. Can you please pray for her?

I wish that they could catch whoever did to her. She is only 26 and she have alot of things like getting married next year, just returned to job that she got laid off few months ago, planning on going back to college.

Thanks to hit and run driver, she has lost everything and she may have to learn again once she recovers. She doesn't deserve this. I hope she wake up from coma soon but I know that it take time. It's really very hard on me.

Wishing for a quick and good recovery! :( Hate to read when people just drive away after hitting a person.

It recently happened in my neighborhood. It though was dark and rainy... the 40 year old woman reported two hours later at the police station, stating she was terrified (which I would be too)... I'm glad she found the courage to deliver herself... The person injured (only) had broken leg and several severe bruises on the thorax (upon the reports in the news)...

This one sounds much worse... Hope the police will catch the person who did that!

I was shopping at the Cub foods store Saturday evening, and saw the TV cameras. It is a very busy intersection, but no excuse to leave a pedestrian laying on the ground in the cold. Temps have been in the 20's and 30's, which would be deadly after a short time. Very sad story.

That's my worst nightmare-that I won't know a car is coming, even if I have the right of way.
 
It angers me every time I see a case like this. :mad2:

I have lost a close friend of mine back in 1991, due to a hit and run. They did never catch the person.

I sure hope they catch this person that did this!! Hopefully cameras were placed in the area stores or what not that can be reviewed.

My heart and prayers go out to her and her family; as well as those of you from AD who know her. that is a terribly sad story
 
Very sad story gets sadder. Joan will get death sentence. The driver, most likely drunk at the time, will get a couple years in prison. For all those that knew her well, I am so sorry that she has been taken from you.
