Deaf and hearing couple!

I have been dating the woman of my dreams. She isabsolutely perfect. We get along exceptioanlly well. I am learning ASL formally at college and she is teachign me as well. Makes learning sign more meaningful to me. We are planning a life time together and prayfully we will be together forever.

I am currently in a situation like yours, Brian. I have been talking to a deaf girl on myspace for over 200 days now. I still haven't met her. I've taken two years of sign language in high school, and a term of it in college. I am worried as to how our relationship will work out, when we do meet. We are, needless to say, truely in love with each other. She lost her hearing about a year ago, due to both her ear drums bursting for no obvious reason. This girl is remarkable, and I really see no flaw in her. I am just worried about the lack of communication. It's hard to tell if she will be happy with me or not over a long period of time, if we do not communicate clearly. She is supposed to have a cochlear implant implanted in her soon, so I think that will help our relationship emmensly. I would really like to be able to use my voice to communicate with her. Supposedly, she is very good at lip reading, but I'm still not sure as to how well that works. I must say after reading this forum, I do feel more comfortable with our relationship. I want to thank everyone who has posted.

:welcome: to AD!

My husband is hearing..when I first met him 5 years ago, he didnt know any sign language. He just learned by hanging out with a group of us and having deaf roommates. It is very important to me that he can sign. My deaf friend's hearing husband refuses to learn sign for her and they have so many communication break downs it is not funny. I wish he would learn for her but he said she can speak and lipread but she cant understand him half of the time so hello!

Good luck!

I just wanted to know because i have heard that deaf and hearing couples are kinda rare. Is that true? My girl and I have been together for 8 months. She is Deaf and I am hearing. Just a question for yall.

Yes It is true... my late husband was hearing... we had many compromises to work on... we were in very much love.... bless his heart he passed away in my arm..13 yrs ago..

I'm deaf, boyfriend's hearing.. been together.. umm.. will be 2 years in august. He's been learning sign, and I can lipread him better than most people I know. scary.
We have no problems.. yes, I'm serious here.. we never fight about anything because we've always been the communicative type.. we talk out our problems.

Well, when about 13 months of your relationship you've been apart, talking becomes essential to the relationship. When I first met him, he was living in washington State, about to move to NC. I was living in Maine, and hating it there, then I moved to NC to be with him Jan 2006. then last July 2006, he was deployed to Kuwait. And I won't see him til July of this year.. and yet, we've never had an argument. because we discuss everything if something is bothering one of us.

So Communication and Trust is a very important part of any relationship. But I really miss him. less than 4 months before I get him back. Can't wait.

Hello,it is not rare.I've seen many deaf and hearing couples here in south africa.I believe it is ok because a hearing partner may be able to help me a lot, like telling me things that i cant be able to hear,or helping in telephone communications, etc.stick to your partner, never mind about what people think. It is not rare.GOODLUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS DEPEND..IF YOU KNOW ASL VERY WELL, VERY SKILLS, BEEN INVOLVED WITH DEAF SOCIAL..:grouphug: COMMUNICATE WITH HER ALL TIMES, HONESTLY EACHOTHER..LET HER GO SOCIAL WITH DEAF PEOPLE..
BECAUSE SOME OF MY FRIENDS, THEIR SPOUSES DONT USE SIGN LANGUGES, ONLY FINGERSPELLING...DONT SOCIAL WITH DEAF PEOPLE, NOTHING...JUST STAY HOME..LOVE HER...FINGERSPELLING OR HOME GESTURE..THATS ALL..IT WILL TURN INTO PROBLEM, CHEATING, NOT GET ALONG..
DEAF SPOUSES MOSTLY LIKE TO BE SOCIAL WITH DEAF PEOPLE..SOME DEAF SPOUSES DONT SOCIAL, AND FORGET THOSE SIGN LANGUAGES BECAUSE THEY STAY HOME ALL TIMES, AND DONT SOCIAL..IT SOUND NOT GOOD.

MY FRIEND BEEN STUBBORN, DONT BELIEVE US ABOUT HER HUBBY BEEN CHEATING FOR LONG 5 OR MORE YEARS, SHE STAYED WITH HIM, WAIT FOR HIM...FINALLY THEY DIVORCED..BECAUSE HE ONLY USE FINGERSPELLING AND DONT COMMUNICATE BY ASL..
ITS DEPEND ON INDIVIDUAL...ITS NOT ALL SAME PEOPLE..
HOPE YOU BOTH DOING WELL AND HAPPY FOREVER!!:cuddle:

I (hearing) first met my boyfriend (deaf) on a website about video games. We got to know each other online for a while, and then decided to meet up when I went to Clemson for a weekend. I lived in PA and he lived in SC, so it was hard for us to find time to see each other.

We were nervous about meeting each other in person because we feared that communication might be a barrier. Luckily, he knows how to lip read really well since I didn't know a lick of sign language, so we got along just fine. For the next year, we talked daily over the computer getting to know each other more until I moved down to SC last August. Since then I've been learning sign language and trying to understand the deaf community even more. He seems proud of me for trying to learn since its hard to find a place to learn down here. I can't travel too much because of school and work.

So far we've been together for a little over 2 years and a month, and I hope that we can stay strong. Being with him is the greatest thing I've ever known.

deaf hearing relationship

hi~

I'm new to this site. I am hearing and my partner recently (I'd say 2 months ago) lost her hearing (later in life). She can read lips proficently and has been learning through books and online, how to sign. I have searched the internet high and low for support sites for the hearing partner in cases like this, and it has landed me here.

We had great communication before her loss, and have maintained that, for the most part since her loss. We speak more often then sign, but we are learning. We are going to take an ASL class together next month and we are both looking forward to that.

I was curious about the longevity of these types of relationships after she mentioned that most fail. From what I've read, though, seems completely possible. We don't doubt our feelings or that we could make it through this, but it is a little - trying.

Is or has anyone been in a similar situation as this?

Thanks for taking the time to read.
