That's what I hate about English. I seem to recall Bernard Shaw complaining about the English phonics.

English is so phonetically inconsistent. Like "ph" pronounced like "f". Why not just use an "f"? That is just one example.

I know. Sometime g is pronouned like f and o can be pronouched like i as in how you say women (pronounced wimen), ti, pronounced /ʃ/ as in nation /.

So you can pronounce ghoti same as fish.

Trying to write sonnets is enough to make MY brain explode! When i try, I keep asking myself if I have my meters right and do I have the pronoucation right? :P
it's enough to tear out my hair.

But you know what, people writting down words phonetically
was a huge help
for me in deciphering how to correctly pronounce English!

Oh, yeah - it was in either "Glass Castle" or "Half-broken Horses"
where the author wrote about her grandfather's dream of writting in some peculiar way on English to simplify the grammar,
and thus make it more accessible to all people.

For me it was mind blowing discovery for only then I found out about
"ghoti" - "fish"
.
I never knew there is SO many ways of pronouncing so many letters
in the same way

This only help you have some idea what phonemes sound like. Stone deaf from birth, here. Not tell you how pronounce word "a". No idea.

Oh, I misunderstood you, sorry.

But what I said stands - people who hear the words well and write them down exactly how it sounds,
greatly helped me to pronounce English correctly.

For example if someone wrote "raccoon" I had no idea whether to say
ray- kon or ruh - k-con like (son )or else

but when someone wrote "rukoon", I more or less got the idea.

The "ghoti" is pronounced "fish" is a joke (wrongly attributed to George Bernard Shaw). It is never pronounced like that. But it is making a serious point that English is not a consistently phonetic language, unlike say, Spanish. BTW some of the spelling differences between American English and British English was due to an American (Webster?) trying to make English more phonetic.

Do you English realize how seriously you can screw up us poor immigrants with your spelling alone?


In the Jeanette Walls book however the method is the same - if the "g"
can be pronounced as "f", and the "ti" is pronounced as "sh" and so on..

Please, please read these books!
