Cult mum kept children in dog cages
A mother involved in a bizarre cult in the Czech Republic beat and tortured her two young sons, forcing them to sleep naked in dogs' cages and eat their own vomit.
The two boys — Ondrej Mauerova, 8, and Jakub Mauerova, 10 — were subjected to horrific abuse from their mother and other members of the secretive Grail Foundation cult while imprisoned in their home for more than a year, the Czech online newspaper aktualine.cz reports.
Appearing in court this week, the boys' mother Klara admitted to stubbing cigarettes out on her sons' bare skin, starving them, whipping them with belts and trying to drown them.
British and Australian outlets have also claimed the boys were partially skinned by their abusers who then ate the flesh but Czech media makes no mention of cannibalism, raising suspicions of fabricated reports.
The sick torture came to light in 2007 when a neighbour installed a TV baby monitor that picked up a similar monitor in the cellar next door showing one of the victims beaten, naked and chained.
The police were called and Ondrej was found imprisoned in a broom closet.
Along with Ondrej and his brother, police also discovered what they believed to be a 13-year-old adopted Norwegian schoolgirl.
But it later emerged that the schoolgirl was actually 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova, one of the children's torturers and the daughter of the Grail Foundation's sect leader.
The boys’ mother broke down and wept in court as she admitted she had hurt her children.
"Yes, I know I hurt my children but I never intended to — horrible things were happening then and I do not understand how I could let it all happen," the newspaper quoted her as saying.
According to Klara, the purpose of the torture was to make her children behave and eventually become independent of the family.
