NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children should brush their teeth after swallowing syrupy cough and cold medications, results of a new study suggest.

"Although some medications are necessary for general health they can be extremely harmful to the teeth if the medicine is given at bedtime or without following proper oral health habits," study author Dr. Carolina Covolo da Costa, of the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil said in a statement from the Academy of General Dentistry.

Her findings are based on a study involving a popular cough medication used to treat respiratory allergies. The syrup was found to be very acidic, while containing no fluoride and only a small amount of calcium -- all factors that could lead to tooth erosion.

To investigate, da Costa and her team studied 70 samples of tooth enamel immersed in various solutions to simulate the normal oral environment during the day and at night for 10 days. An antihistamine cough syrup was repeatedly applied to some of the tooth samples and several were also given daily fluoride treatments.

Under the microscope all of the enamel samples exposed to the antihistamine showed signs of erosion, but the fluoride "protected the enamel and thus is capable of diminishing the erosive effect of an acid product," the researchers report in the current issue of General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry.

"Fluoride was considered the fundamental key for the preservation of sound dental tissue in a situation where daily acid challenges were present," Da Costa's group says. Although this study was done in the lab on tooth enamel samples, they believe fluoride "probably will do the same" for people.

In light of the findings, "parents need to be aware that long-term use (of syrupy cough medications), especially at bedtime, could cause an increased risk of tooth decay," according to Dr. Paul Bussman, a spokesperson from the academy.

He explained that the effect is "very much similar to allowing a child to drink juice before bedtime," in that there is "no saliva, increased sugar, increased attack from acid-producing bacteria (and an) increased risk of decay."

Preventing dental erosion of this nature is as simple as maintaining good dental habits, however. "Brushing and flossing is a very important part of the prevention," Bussman told Reuters Health. "If there is no bacteria or plaque to convert the sugar to acid, the risk of decay decreases," he explained.

However, he acknowledged that there is "very little concern" among dentists about dental erosion resulting from cough syrups and similar medications, "as long as the exposure is short term and not used on a regular basis."

I sent this one to my family as it was on the front page of Yahoo. This is good F.Y.I.

Yeah theyre making them tastier and appealing to kids these days. With their high alcohol content, in fact quite a bit higher than coolers, the cough meds may as well become kiddie booze in the near future.

I am sure that cough syrups are bad because of the antihistamine and some other chemicals.

I am against fluoride because it is still not safe. I have that damn fluoride in my town's water pipes. That's why many people buy water bottles. The fluoride preserves your tooth, but your body hate having the fluoride in its system. We never had a problem with old fashion system without the fluoride until some werid dentists bought up the idea. The old system was to hot boil water before it go thru the pipes. A water company employee has to be careful how much fluoride in the town water. If he/she put a little bit too much of it in the water, it kill a few people from drinking it. (It's true.)

Yes anybody from the old days will remember when that was happening on a daily basis in the obiturary section of the newspapers until they figured out what was wrong and found a safe level for the fluoride.

Better to go with

1. All Natural toothpaste

2. All Natural cough syrup

3. All Natural Mountain fresh water

Yes I know for a long time that cough syrups is bad for kids's teeth. The doctors don't write a recipt for the children but herbal cough drops.

Interesting, have you any source for this?

Just scan for the newspapers from the 1950's in the obiturary section.

" Water posioning " or " Undetermined posioning "

or one of the many variations for the cause of the death in the obiturary section. I am sure many will unfortunately, turn up and it does say alots about at that time. People were not sure what was wrong with the water supply at that time.

Webexplorer, is there a water bottle company that does not sell flouride-laced water? I am curious because I can't find any right now ? I know to go to the mountains to get spring water. That was a good article.

To be honest, there are alot of things that can harm your child's teeth not just only cough syrups, that why it's important to be sure your child brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and before they go to bed....

That is a good question. One of the companies that sells flouride-laced water is Dannon. Now, I really don't know if the companies are willing to filter it out with their own expense because they care about money.

Some water companies added aluminum water in the bottle because it kills the parasities (Giardia and Crytosporidium). However, I strongly ban the aluminum because the company should have boiled the water which is enough to kill the parasities, and it is effective as a natural way. I think I know why - the company does not have time to boil them.

The aluminum causes several dieases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Lou Gehrig's. This does not have enough evidence if it causes a cancer - someday we will have a better technology that would tell us about it. I feel like that we are still in the "old-fashioned" technologies in our era.

One more thing. If the companies remove everything in the water bottle using several filters, our body might be not enough to be strength. Our body need to absorb minerals in order to stay alive. Aluminum and flouride are the ones that need to be removed from the water -- so that we do not need some cough syrups. Maybe, that would make a difference.

just have the kids take it like a shot. passed the teeth, over the gums look out stomach here it comes.
