Daily Herald - Convicted abuser back in court for shopping, trips home during probation

Making trips to his Lehi home and Costco during his work release landed a deaf former sign language instructor, who was convicted of sexually abusing an 18-year-old deaf student, back in court.

Roger Wilkins, 38, of Lehi, is authorized to go to work, not home or shopping, during his one-year stint at the Utah County Jail, deputy Utah County attorney Donna Kelly said.

After the probation violations were discovered, Wilkins's work release privileges at the jail were temporarily revoked.

The violations came to light after several of Wilkins's Lehi neighbors noticed he was coming back to the neighborhood, Kelly said.

"I think the neighbors have been understandably vigilant" about not wanting Wilkins to violate his probation, she said.

Wilkins was a registered sex offender before he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the 18-year-old girl. He was convicted of lewdness involving a child in 1993.

Adult Probation and Parole issued a report to the 4th District Court on Sept. 8 indicating the violation. Wilkins appeared in court before Judge Lynn W. Davis on Wednesday morning along with his attorney.

After working out some provisions with his probation officer, Wilkins will be allowed back into the work release program, as long as he follows the new probation modifications, Davis said.

Wilkins's probation officer couldn't comment on the specifics of the case.

Originally Wilkins wanted his work release to allow him to continue his home-based business in Lehi. However, Utah County Jail work release regulations do not allow inmates to work from their homes, Utah County Sheriff's Office Capt. John Carlson has said.

"It is a policy that home-based businesses are not allowed," in the program, he said. "If it can't be supervised, then we don't allow it."

Police say Wilkins sexually assaulted the student twice in 2004. Wilkins, who took a plea deal in 2005, agreed to enter guilty pleas to two third-degree felony counts of attempted forcible sexual abuse in exchange for dropping two first-degree felony attempted rape and forcible sodomy counts.

Wilkins worked as a sign language professor at Salt Lake Community College, and in 2002 he was an adjunct instructor teaching American Sign Language at Utah Valley State College.

He was sentenced on Feb. 16.

I heard about him a few times over the last few years. I happen to know him as I had a couple classes with him at my alumnus school. :ugh:
It's both sickening and sad that this world has produced such people. :rl:
