Controlling rear wheel drive vehicles?

Even public buses, I never seen them front wheel drive.

And MOST cop cars are RWD, only few FWD. Cops prefers RWD because it is easier to catch speeders than FWD does.

correct. most police cars (typically highway patrols) designed to catch speeders are sport cars.... hence RWD.

for police car not designed for catching speeders and local/city roads, it's mostly mostly FWD. in NYC - NYPD have Chevy Volt, Prius, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and um... bunch more for city - all FWD.

and for highway, NYPD has Dodge Charger and Ford Crown Victoria. all RWD.

Please try to keep this an apple to apple comparison. I'm interested in whether any of you have had more than 1 rear wheel drive vehicle or drove them for an extended amount of time.

Did you feel that some rear wheel drive vehicles had better control than other rear wheel vehicles?

Try to keep the discussion towards rear wheel drive.

BMW M-series. period. the best RWD vehicle ever. end of discussion :cool2:

In my opinion, for control, Infinti G37, For workhorse, dodge with Cummins diesel, for sporty performance, Honda S2000 and Acura NSX. Toyota Supra as well. I'm not a fan of BMW cars.

Acura NSX... my dream car...

Honda S2000. definitely a fun car but too tiny. both cars have excellent handling.

Yup, Honda came up with an idea to compete with Ferrari and other more expensive cars...so NSX was born. Too bad its discontinued in 2005. I heard rumors they're bringing it back in 2014 or 2015 with hybrid drive train. I don't like complicated drive train, shrugs.

Growing up Ive had lots of RWD cars... depending on where the weight is will tell how they handle. I had a 78 caprice classic 2 door that got through everything just fine with a great set of tires. My 85 Ford ltd plowed through the snow as well with no issues. Now my parents had a 91 and 93 caprice and it was shit in the snow.
Every 4x4 I owned handled great in everything but they all stop the same on ice.
My wife now has a 94 Infiniti and it is really shitty in the rain, the ass end slides out and everything because it is heavier in the front and now distributed evenly. My 87 Suzuki samuri was 4x4 but I mainly drove it in 2wd and it was awesome because the weight was evenly distributed throughout on all 4 wheels. So if a car is long and weight is in front the ass will slide out on you reguardless. you can compensate with sandbags like they do with trucks but then you lose your trunk space as well.

My buddy had a geo metro and it wouldn't stay in a lane with snow...poor car was everywhere and it was fwd... so depends on size, weight distribution, tire conditions...it all plays in the outcome of the performance.

no I did not forget.

so you're talking about COMMERCIAL vehicle. well yes I know commercial vehicles are RWD because of weight distribution and power but that's irrelevant. why would I talk about commercial vehicle when OP is asking about whether or not if RWD has better control than other RWD?

That's was your excuse? Trucks are not just commercial vehicle btw.

you should know that maneuverability is not on the top of the list when it comes to commercial vehicle....

Because you don't know what is 1999 Chevy Express van.

ok and....? what does that have to do with having a better control? that's why I did not talk about commercial vehicle. it's irrelevant.

Google 1999 Chevy Express van. It's part fo commercial. That's all YOU think of sport only. Which I disagreed with that. RWD is not just sport only.

I never said RWD is cheaper than FWD.

Yes, you did. Stop be confused.

"it's cheaper for an average car to have FWD. "

Yes, It sounds like RWD is cheaper than FWD to me.

oh boy.... another quibbling....

I've driven both RWD and FWD for several years. thousands and thousands of miles. personally - I prefer RWD.

FWD does have a better control especially in winter. many cars are FWD because it's simple - it goes where you steer at. to control a RWD in slippery condition - it takes some skill. many drivers are just ordinary people... so FWD makes sense for them.

most RWD cars tend to be for serious drivers.... like sport cars and german cars.
see? I said CARS... I was talking about cars with RWD... I didn't say all RWD are sport cars...

I'm speaking generally. don't be too picky over little details.

most sport cars are RWD. RWD is not easy to control for average drivers.... it's easier to regain control from oversteer than understeer. and it's cheaper for an average car to have FWD.

business.... like a town car? cab?
see? I said FWD is cheaper. and why would I want to talk about commercial vehicles with RWD? they have shitty control. OP wants to talk about better control.

it's ok. deep breath. time to move on

Oh yeah you keeps quibbling again and again.
see? I said CARS... I was talking about cars with RWD... I didn't say all RWD are sport cars...

Again, Why you still talk about sport cars? 1999 Chevy Express van and Previas are not even sport car. Wake up. Another pointless excuse.

1999 Chevy Express van is part of commercial. How hard to understand? OP wants to talk about better control for van and you talked about car. WTF.

No, it still not CLEAR that you said FWD is cheaper. Accept it.

the reason why I talk about cars is because OP is asking if we have any experience with RWD.... much of my experience with RWD is sport cars and SUVs. I don't have much experience with commercial vehicles or semi-trucks for an extended amount of time unless you want to count u-haul vehicles.

and beside.... there's no point in discussing about commercial vehicles since they are not really designed to be "awesome" in handling. maybe you want to talk about its "awesome" offroad capability but I'm not interested since I have no experience with it. you can go ahead with it.

and lookie here -

not my fault that you have a poor English comprehension

OP never said anything about better control for van only. It's all about the RWD vs RWD in general from cars to trucks, even semi trucks.

Rain and snow is when RWD starts getting fun. Low speed drifting is a blast. I forget where you are located Derek, do you get a lot of snow and ice? If it's just rain you're worried about i'd say it's not much of a issue unless you like to keep the hammer down in tight corners. Braking and unpowered turning won't really be affected much.

I have a 1999 Chevy Express van. I would like to get a Toyota Previa. My Mom worries because they used to have a rear wheel drive Previa and it was really terrible in rain. That is why I'm curious about whether some of rear wheel drive ones control better than other rear wheel drive cars.

Why you made negative about commercial are bad handling and you don't experience with them. I drove them many times and can't remember which one of them have great handling. So don't mean they are bad handling.

I don't see "talk about better control for van"....

Read again. You are so force on 1st post and don't bother to read Derek's 2nd post.

Chevy Express van and Toyota Previa are van.

Insult my English is necessary? Where's your manners?

thank you for proving my point. the fact that you can't remember which one has a great handling means they are not really designed to be great at handling therefore.... what's the point of discussing about commercial vehicles?

you started it first. you kept saying that I said RWD is cheaper when in fact I said FWD is cheaper. where's your manner, huh?

this discussion is over. time to move on. you can go ahead and reply back. I'll let you have the last words. I'll just be a bigger man than you by not replying back.

I'm most interested in getting a Previa or maybe even a 1991-1996 Roadmaster/Caprice wagon. Those would be what I would drive daily, not my Express van. It is WAY too big--especially with extended wheelbase. I was just curious about different rear wheel drives and whether you were able to handle them. That is the purpose of the post.

depends on what you want to use it for. carrying a lot of stuff?

instead of Previa - I would get Chevy Astro AWD. the small one. I've always loved that thing.

I'm in Chicago area, but I often go to Michigan.
