I have no idea where to post this! azdklsjfa;klsdjf

Anyway, I do wear a cochlear implant (on my left ear) so I can talk. I will start to learn ASL as a language class this year (YAY) at my high school. But that isn't what I wanted to talk about.

Basically, I have been speaking for a long time as I got my cochlear when I was three. My speech is fantastic but I lack communication skills. It's more on the listening part, I think. I'm not GREAT at lipreading but I find it easier to talk to a person if we're facing each other.

So I guess I'd have to learn how to read lips better...? How could I do that???

I also noticed that when I'm watching TV and I'm literally able to put the captions on, that I won't be listening to whatever is going on. Instead, I'll be reading the words that the characters are saying. I know that I'm not listening to the people as much as I probably should be because I recently finished watching Merlin on Netflix. The actors and actresses are from mainly Europe so I would have a harder time following what they were saying because of their accents. I was watching Colin Morgan (Merlin) and Bradley James (King Arthur) on YouTube last night--just interviews, mainly and I had NO idea what they were saying at all! When I was watching the show, I barely NOTICED their accent. I mean, literally, I remember thinking various times about how their voices were so clear and very understandable.
Well actually their voices on the show are not as overlapping as the interviews soooo...

Hm. It's just that this year, when I go back for my junior year, I want to be more socially active and be more capable of holding a conversation with a group of people (which I'm VERY bad at. Honestly, I just find myself staring elsewhere).

The bit in bold is exactly me. I can lipread well and also sign but my communication skills stink but I find it easier when facing each other, basically one to one.

The second bit in bold is also what I want to achieve as well :)

Speechreading is a difficult "skill" to acquire. Reason some "sounds" are down one's throat. "PBM" are quite visible while other are not. That is why the "low percentage" picked up.

Thus one must pay attention a great deal to follow conversations.-"lipreading/Speechreading"

Good luck in trying

aside: the above from my Speechreading classes at Canadian Hearing Society/Toronto

The problem for us with trying to communicate using spoken language is that we are using our weakest sense for communication instead of our strongest sense which are the eyes. Learn ASL or whatever sign language is in your country and you will find yourself really fully engaged in communicating.

Grew up orally and had difficulty with maintaining communication. Got severely depressed after years and years of trying so hard only to fail. Learned ASL at 25 years old... the quality of my life improved 110%.

I don't know why the specialists or hearing parents think it is ok to forbid their deaf kids from learning signing language. So frustrating because of the oral-only philosophy.

Group conversation is tricky because you need to focus on many things, I would not get depressed if you do not master this effort. You can become better at it, but you have to be realistic about having a disadvantage in that setting.

I think that those that keep saying "learn ASL" must come from areas that have a lot of deaf people living there and thus keep forgetting that as the old saying goes "it takes two to tango". To use ASL effectively in a social situation all the people in the conversation would have to know it. There actually are areas where the use of ASL is very rare.

And also, I go to a mainstream school where ASL has JUST been introduced (I'm taking it this year :3) soooo not very many people know! I know that some of my friends put the class down on their schedule form sheet thing back in... February (sometime last year) so I'm hoping that it may get easier to interact with them. We'll see!
I could have grown up knowing sign language but I didn't. I was such a stubborn little child. xd

As for lipreading, I have tried to watch tv for practice. It's hard! And I didn't actually realize how much a deaf person could miss because of how the editors of this show they may be watching edit the scenes. o-o I'm just thankful for the captions that finally came probably before I was born.

I didn't want to say this but I really don't know what you are saying. I tried to read your words in ASL word order and maybe I'm not good enough at ASL but I am pretty good at ASL. I honestly don't know what you are saying. It actually hurts me to say this but it is true.
I feel like I'm failing as a deaf person. Like I should be able to understand what you are saying since we are both deaf people but I'm having trouble.

I have some Facebook friends who message and status in BSL. I used to read it off just fine but now it sometimes takes me a moment or two. Whoops. I think it's because I used to write things in BSL word order to get the hang of it.

Fel......Look into Deaf summer camps.Summer Camps for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Teens
Look into the Gally and NTID ones especially.......Contact your state's School for the Deaf and see what resources etc they offer......

This isn't part of the thread but I'd like to ask some questions privately of Deafdyke but I can send private messages to you.
Can you possibly pm me an email or some sort of contact?

you have to friend me first

That is not true. I have PM people here and we did not need to friend one another to do it.

Could she be saying that she will not respond unless you do friend her first. Or is it something from her individual setting options?
